Contract Details
The successful candidate will be required to commence in post on 14 July 2025. The post holder will report directly to the Head of Medicine or a nominated Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine.
A 6-month contract will be offered, subject to the satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks. Any extension thereof will be discussed prior to the expiry of the contract, subject to relevant considerations.
The Role
Marymount University Hospital & Hospice is Ireland's leading specialist provider of palliative care, situated in Cork city. As a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation, Marymount delivers expert, compassionate care to patients and families facing life-limiting illness across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. It is consistently recognised as one of the foremost palliative care providers in Ireland, and aspires to be one of the best.
Marymount is a regional centre for specialist palliative care for the HSE South catchment area, working in close partnership with Cork University Hospital, primary care teams, and community services to ensure integrated, seamless care for patients across the region.
At a national level, Marymount is one of a small number of organisations providing the full spectrum of specialist palliative care inpatient, day services, outpatient, and community under a single provider.
Marymount has strong academic and research links with University College Cork and is actively engaged in palliative care education, professional development, and clinical research, contributing to the advancement of palliative care practice at both regional and national level.
This standalone six-month role will be embedded within the Palliative Care service, supporting both community and inpatient functions, and will operate under the direction of the Head of Medicine or nomianted Consultant.
Candidates must possess, at time of application:
Before taking up the post, the successful candidate must be registered on the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland, in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Act 2007. Experience working within an acute Irish healthcare setting and/or a palliative medicine environment is also required.
Required English Language Competency:
All NCHDs taking up employment with the HSE and section 38 organisations who were not registered with the Irish Medical Council in any of the divisions of the Register of Medical Practitioners prior to 1st January 2015, or who did not complete the entirety of their under-graduate medical training in the Republic of Ireland, are required to provide evidence under one of the following categories:
Category 1. Doctors who completed their Medical degree in English from any of the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, The United States of America or The United Kingdom must provide:
- A copy of their Medical Degree Certificate
Category 2. Doctors who completed:
The Irish State Leaving Certificate examination or A Levels in the United Kingdom and a Medical
Degree in English must provide all three of the following:
Category 3. Doctors who meet the English Language requirements by attaining certification via the recognised English Language Tests must submit a certificate of test results from either the International English Test System (IELTS) (Academic EXAM) or Occupational English Test (OET).
There are no exemptions to the above requirements.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
Age
Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004). A candidate who is not lassified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.
