Senior Library Assistant
Essential Qualifications and Skills
Candidates must:
Have at least two years’ satisfactory experience of library work
Provide evidence of supervisory experience
Have the requisite knowledge, skills and competencies to carry out the role to a high standard
Be capable and competent of fulfilling the role to a high standard
Have obtained at least Grade O6 (formerly D3) in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher, ordinary, applied, or vocational programmes) or equivalent
Or have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher
Or have appropriate relevant experience which encompasses equivalent skills and expertise
The Senior Library Assistant will have two major roles. Roughly half of the postholder’s time will be spent managing a team of four library assistants, a full-time library attendant, and part-time attendants, to deliver library user services and carry out library administrative tasks. This aspect of the post will include management of quality.
The remainder of the postholder’s time will be spent working as a team member with senior library staff on the development and delivery of library user education and reference services.
Hours of work will include evening and Saturday duty on a rota basis.
DutiesTo manage service to library users on a day-to-day basis
To maintain a staff rota for library user services
To maintain internal procedures for library user services
To manage annual leave of library assistant staff and to maintain internal records for annual and sick leave
To manage a team of library assistants and library attendants in the following areas where appropriate:
Acquisitions/procurement
Subscriptions
Document supply
Goods inwards
Correspondence
Material processing
Shelving
To work on a team with library senior staff to develop a comprehensive user education programme
To schedule library staff to deliver 1st year induction sessions
To participate in the delivery of all aspects of the user education programme
To participate in the delivery of the library reference service
To undertake other duties as may be defined from time to time by the Head Librarian
The salary scale attached to this post (Grade V) is €51,211 – €61,251
Candidates may be appointed up to the 3rd point (€54,302) of the salary scale for previous relevant industry experience in accordance with University Policy
35 hours per week
