Overall Role and Context:

SETU is seeking a Senior Library Assistant Grade V. The successful candidate will undertake key duties in the Library as outlined below. As a member of the library rostering team, the post holder will be required to work evenings and weekends to provide cover during library opening hours. The successful candidate may be assigned to any of a very wide range of areas or activities carried out in a University Library in any of its campuses.

The job will involve regular contact with students, staff, the public, and organisations and individuals at all levels where discretion, tact, courtesy, and judgement will have to be constantly exercised.

All jobs in the Library demand a good knowledge and skill in the use of Information and Communication Technologies, and appointees will be expected to use new techniques and technologies as they arise. SETU will provide the necessary training as appropriate.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Library Assistant will be responsible for overseeing and implementing library developments. As a member of the library rostering team, the post holder will be required to work evenings and weekends to provide cover during library opening hours.

The Senior Library Assistant may be assigned to any of a very wide range of areas or activities carried out in an Institute Library, in any of its campuses. Additionally, he/she will have supervisory responsibility for a section/function of the library’s activities and will normally work under the direction of one of the Senior Library staff. Key duties include:

  • Managing circulation issues on the library management system including book reservations and overdue books

  • Cataloguing exam papers and theses

  • Adding items to the Institutional Repository

  • External reader administration

  • Enquiry work

  • Circulation desk duties including issuing and discharging loans

  • Preparation of user guides and information packs

  • Assisting in the development of new services

  • All jobs in the Library demand a good knowledge and skill in the use of Information and Communication Technologies, and appointees will be expected to use new techniques and technologies as they arise. The Institute will provide the necessary training as appropriate

  • Following appointment, the appointee will be assigned to a particular location and post – institutes may operate a number of different locations in addition to the main campus

  • Organising, supervising, assisting, and advising staff and students doing project work

This role could also involve supporting staff in research, collection and collation of reasonably complex material, and the preparation of reports and submissions. The job will involve regular contacts with students, staff, the public, and organizations and individuals at all levels where discretion, tact, and courtesy would have to be constantly exercised.

Person Specification – Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

  • Have the requisite knowledge, skills, and competencies to carry out the role

  • Be capable and competent of fulfilling the role to a high standard

  • Have obtained at least Grade D3 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher, ordinary, applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent, or have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher, or have appropriate relevant experience which encompasses equivalent skills and expertise

  • Demonstrable skills to work effectively within a team to achieve a common goal ensuring standards are adhered to and maintained

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills

  • Ability to work on own initiative and in an independent environment

  • Analytical and numerical ability, with strong attention to detail

  • Excellent computer skills with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and use of other IT systems

  • Evidence of working as a team player with a flexible and positive approach to work

Hours of Work: The appointee will be required to work 35 hours per week. A flexible approach to work is needed, as some roles may require evening work during the academic year and Saturday work occasionally throughout the year.

Salary: Grade V Salary Scale €51,211 - €61,251

Annual Leave: 25 days annual leave. Annual leave will be in accordance with arrangements authorised by the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science from time to time.
