Staff Grade Medical Scientist for the National Newborn Bloodspot Screening Laboratory (NNBSL)
Purpose of the Role:
Newborn bloodspot screening is an integral part of the Irish health service. It is a complex process ensuring that all babies born in hospital or in the community are offered screening for a number of inherited or congenital disorders and followed up until the screening process is completed and baby is referred to the appropriate clinical team such that onward testing and appropriate clinical management can be commenced.
The methodologies currently used in the laboratory include mass spectrometry, immunoassay, flurometry and molecular testing.
The purpose of this post is to provide a safe, efficient, quality laboratory service in conjunction with other Medical Scientists, to satisfy the needs and requirements of service users (newborns) whose samples are tested as part of the Irish National Newborn Screening Programme.
The post holder is required to perform scientific work in the laboratory under the supervision of senior colleagues. She/he will carry out routine analyses, participate in implementing new methods and will actively participate in the laboratory quality management system to ISO15189 standards
The successful candidate may be required to work across CHI sites and services in line with organisational requirements and the development of the new children’s hospital and associated services in the validation and commissioning period.
Essential Criteria:
Candidates must, on the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the post, possess:
· Be CORU registered (Please provide CORU ref number)

Desirable Criteria:
· Hospital laboratory experience- Biochemistry or other Laboratory or project work in the area of newborn screening
· Experience in the use of Q-Pulse quality management system
· Familiar with ISO15189 standards
· Experience in a laboratory information system
