This post is to support the Clinical duties of the Academic Officer while engaged in post graduate education.
Portiuncula University Hospital comprises of 194 beds which includes plans for a new 50 bed ward block opened in Aug 2024. Portiuncula University Hospital provides 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with a 24/7 Emergency Department which had 30,283 attendances in 2023. The hospital serves the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly and has a natural referral pathway to the Midlands.
Ballinasloe is the largest town in County Galway. The town has excellent junior and secondary schools and is close to the University of Galway and the Technology University of Shannon in Athlone. The town is served by public transport to the major centres. The area offers an abundance of sports, leisure and entertainment facilities. The town offers easy access to major regional centres of Galway City.
The Department of Medcine aims to provide a safe consultant delivered patient centred service.
The post holder will participate in the on-call Rota commitment at Portiuncula University Hospital.
•To support and implement the National Acute Medicine Programme
This post is in keeping with the Report on The National Taskforce on Medical Staffing which identified
the need for Consultant delivered services.
•To ensure that NCHDs continues to receive adequate training and education. The post holder will help
deliver the curriculum to undergraduate student from the National University of
Ireland Galway (NUIG) and the University of Limerick (UL) during each academic year. Improve linkages
with GP’s to provide patient centred services and direct access for patients
•The post-holder will function as part of a multi-disciplinary team of consultants and NCHDs, nursing and
allied health professionals.
•The consultant appointed will provide general and critical care services at consultant level.
•The post holder will work with the academic officer in delivering a 1:8 on call rota.
•The current complement of junior staff will be shared across the Department of Medicine.
•Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients.
•The post-holder will play a key role in implementing integrated systems that optimise the delivery of
care in the setting to enhance the quality and efficiency of service provision.
•The post-holder will in conjunction with the Clinical Director design a practice plan to maintain and
develop the current services in conjunction with initiatives.
•Be involved in teaching and provide an audit centred approach in the Department.
•This post will facilitate on-going Continuous Medical Education.
•Improve linkages with GP’s, bed utilisation and facilitate rapid assessment and diagnosis, initiate early
intervention
