Temporary Tourist Site Assistant
Cork County Council is currently recruiting for the 2026 season for Temporary Part Time Tourist Site Assistants at Camden Fort Meagher, Camden Road, Crosshaven, County Cork. The ideal candidate must be self motivated, hard working, and enthusiastic.
SECTION 2: DUTIES
Reporting to the Camden Fort Meagher Manager, Assistant Manager, or other designated officer, the duties may include but are not limited to the following. The post holder may also be required to perform other duties appropriate to the position which may be assigned to him or her from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office.
Meet and greet all visitors to Camden Fort Meagher.
Conduct tours of Camden Fort Meagher.
Provide relevant local tourist information to visitors.
Ensure smooth operation and assist with crowd control.
Keep up to date with historical research provided on an ongoing basis.
Take phone calls and complete bookings.
Restock and maintain the gift shop as required.
Operate the ticket office and gift shop cash desk as required.
Follow cash handling procedures as instructed.
Assist in the setting up of events, special tours, exhibitions, shows, performances, and other tasks outside of normal duties.
Ensure full compliance with Health and Safety legislation, safety policies, and procedures.
Maintain cleanliness of public areas, staff areas, and all other areas.
Open and close the fort as required.
Undertake training as required.
Perform other duties appropriate to the position which may be assigned to him or her from time to time and contribute to the development of the post while in office.

SECTION 3: ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA / QUALIFICATIONS
Character Each candidate must be of good character. The successful applicant will be subject to Garda Vetting prior to any appointment being confirmed.
Health Each candidate must be in a state of health that indicates a reasonable prospect of the ability to render regular and efficient service. The role involves extensive walking over terrain which can at times be uneven and physically challenging.
Education, Training, Experience and Other Requirements Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:
• Have the ability to deal with the public in an efficient and courteous manner and possess good communication skills.
The following are desirable but not essential:
• Relevant experience in customer service or a retail environment, guided tours, character roles, or acting roles.
• Experience in carrying out primary historical research.
• A full Class B driving licence free from endorsement.
• Experience working in a museum or gallery environment.
Age Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he or she is not classified as a new entrant within the meaning of the Public Services Superannuation Act 2004. A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 70 years of age.
Transport Holders of the office shall hold a full driving licence for Class B vehicles and shall drive a motor car in the course of their duties. For this purpose they must provide and maintain a car to the satisfaction of the local authority.
SECTION 4: SELECTION PROCESS
A shortlisting process may be applied based on the information provided in the application form. The recruitment selection process will include an interview. Candidates will be assessed under the following criteria:
• Teamwork
• Information Management, Delivery of Results, and Self Development
• Customer Service and Communication Skills
A panel may be formed on the basis of the interview. Candidates whose names are placed on the panel and who satisfy the local authority that they possess the qualifications declared for the position and are otherwise suitable for appointment may be appointed as appropriate vacancies arise during the lifetime of the panel.
SECTION 5: TENURE
The position is temporary, seasonal, and part time. The post is pensionable.
The position is for the 2026 season. The contract may be terminated at any time subject to normal legal requirements. A panel may be formed to fill temporary part time vacancies for Tourist Site Assistant at Camden Fort Meagher which may arise during the lifetime of the panel.
SECTION 6: WAGES
The hourly rate of pay is €17.0259 from Monday to Saturday.
The Sunday premium rate of pay is €22.6444 per hour, which is 1.33 times the Monday to Saturday hourly rate.
The person appointed will be required to work on a Saturday and or Sunday as part of the employment contract. In accordance with Section 14(1) of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, the requirement to work on a Sunday has been taken into account in determining the above rate of pay.
The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government policy.
SECTION 7: LOCATION OF POST
The base for working purposes shall be Camden Fort Meagher, Camden Road, Crosshaven, County Cork.
Holders of the office shall reside in the district in which their duties are to be performed or within a reasonable distance. Cork County Council reserves the right to assign the employee to any department, premises, or district in use by the Council now or in the future.
Changes in the location of employment will not result in payment of disturbance money or compensation. The person appointed will be required to provide, at their own expense, the necessary mode of travel to and from work.
SECTION 8: WORKING HOURS
The employment is part time. The minimum working hours are 20 hours over a five day working week, Monday to Sunday, with the possibility of additional hours depending on the operational requirements of the facility. This may include weekends, public holidays, and evenings as directed.
CAMDEN FORT MEAGHER 2026 SEASON
Week commencing 27 April 2026 to 1 November 2026: Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am (or 10:00 am) to 5:00 pm, depending on the time of year.
Working hours may extend beyond these times and staff will be required to be on site before opening and after closing times.
SECTION 9: ANNUAL LEAVE
The annual leave entitlement is 8 percent of the total hours worked. Cork County Council's leave year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Granting of annual leave, payment for annual leave, and arrangements for public holidays will be governed by the provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, as amended.
SECTION 10: ELIGIBILITY TO WORK IN IRELAND
Please note that in order to work in Ireland, a non EEA national, unless exempted, must hold a valid Employment Permit. If you are successful in the selection process, you will be required prior to appointment to confirm that you are in possession of such a permit.
