Tunnel Duty Officer 

Key Tasks:

The Duty Officers provide 24/7 supervision and traffic management of the tunnel and tunnel approaches. Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide 24 hour, 365 day continuous monitoring of tunnel and associated approach roads on a rotating shift basis.
  • Monitoring of tunnel conditions using SCADA control systems, CCTV, Intelligent Traffic System (ITS), automatic Incident Detection Systems (IDS), Road Weather Stations and other control and supervision systems.
  • To implement traffic management schemes in response to normal, abnormal or emergency situations as per procedures. Working with roadside rapid response technicians and toll plaza personnel in the implementation of closures and diversions
  • Response to alarms or emergency calls
  • Liaison and cooperation with emergency services in response to emergency. To assist with emergency services in the use and operation of tunnel drainage, mechanical, electrical and traffic control systems.
  • Monitor the locations of staff in and around the Tunnel and facilitating controlled access to secure areas as necessary. Monitor the area where permits to work have been issued for planned inspections and maintenance.
  • Record and report data relating to events and incidents on the road and tunnel.
Key Relationships:
  • Maintain close relationships with Maintenance Team and Tolling Company, ensuring an approachable yet style.
  • It is essential that you maintain a professional attitude and approach to road users and members of the public.
Key Skills:
  • A good attitude & approach to Health & Safety issues and practices is paramount
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Capable of working without direct supervision and happy to work as part of a team.
  • Comfortable with the use of SCADA controls and communications equipment
Key Attributes:
  • Dependability – ability to remain alert for long periods and carry out required escalation in event of incidents occurring.
  • Self motivated – importance of work in attaining personal satisfaction.
  • Adaptable – remains effective in changing environments, situations and problems.
  • Acceptability – non abrasive style to colleagues and customers

Candidates shall hold minimum Leaving Cert level or equivalent education. Candidates should possess acceptable IT and interpersonal skills, be capable of working without supervision and be a team player. Previous experience of working within an automated control room or similar monitoring position on a 24 hour shift rota would be a distinct advantage.
