Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Pharmaceutical Technician will:

  • Assemble medication requisitions and prescriptions as approriate.
  • Extemporaneously compound medication.
  • Participate in the rotation compounding cytotoxic and biological medication the aseptic unit.
  • Pre-pack bulk preparations.
  • Top up medication on designated wards and departments.
  • Ensure the receipt, checking and storage of goods received in line with legislative requirements.
  • Participate in ordering medicines and pharmacy stock management activities as required.
  • Adhere to the HSE National Financial Regulations in the procurement of medication.
  • Be responsible for stock control. Participate in stock rotation, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained and to ensure that out of date stock is removed from the shelves and disposed of appropriately, both in pharmacy and on wards.
  • Participate in the dispensing of controlled drugs and to maintain appropriate records.
  • Participate in the dispensing of specialised drugs e.g. clozapine and maintain appropriate records.
  • Participate in the management of clinical trial materials according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Take responsibility for the management of returned drugs.
  • Participate in audit activities and protocol development..
  • Participate in stocktaking.
  • Ensure the maintenance of standards of infection prevention and control.
  • Operate computers as required.
  • Participate in the maintenance of the security of the pharmacy department and assuring the personal safety of themselves and colleagues.
  • Attend mandatory training and continuing education courses deemed advisable / necessary by the Pharmacy Executive Manager or designated deputy.
  • Be involved in checking processes in accordance with departmental protocols and procedures.
  • Assist in the training of new staff in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Liaise with management and staff in matters of departmental procedures or as when problems arise.
  • Make recommendations to the supervisor as to how methods and procedures can be improved.
  • Observe and report incidents to the Pharmacy Executive Manager or designated deputy of any unusual situations, occurrences, conditions or complaints including those related to drugs, drug requests, drug usage or security within the pharmacy or hospital.
  • Advise the Pharmacy Executive Manager or designated deputy of malfunctioning or unsafe equipment in the pharmacy.
  • Ensure that work is carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the provisions of the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act.
  • Perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time including cover for colleagues on annual leave, training courses or sickness absences.
  • Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role e.g. medication safety domains.
  • To support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service.
