WGH Clinical Midwife Specialist, Obstetric Ultrasound

The purpose of this Clinical Midwife Specialist - Obstetric Ultrasound is to:

Deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Midwife Specialist Posts, 4thedition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2024.

The Clinical Midwife Specialist (CMS) will provide clinical expertise and support to staff working in Maternity & Gynaecology Services. S/he will provide leadership in the delivery of specialised services and will ensure the Ultrasound service is part of a dynamic and growing health care facility catering for the health needs of women at all stages during pregnancy and the postnatal period. The CMS will carry out the duties appropriate to an Ultra Sonographer in relation to this specialised area and support and supervise staff in training within Scope of Practice of Clinical Midwife Specialist (Obstetric Ultrasound).

The CMS will have co-responsibility for the management of the Early Pregnancy and Fetal Assessment Unit, working with the other Clinical Midwife Specialists currently in the post therefore sharing the responsibilities and clinical load.

Annually the CMS will collect statistics for audit purposes and submission of data and Key Performance Indicators pertaining to the area Ultrasonography

The candidate will also be responsible for the upkeep and service logs of all ultrasound equipment attached to the Obstetric department including the antenatal clinics, this data is maintained in electronic format. The unit does not have a foetal Medicine Consultant on site therefore the candidate will arrange further imaging as necessary and request foetal medicine appointments via letter and email to the tertiary centres in consultation with Consultant Obstetrician. The reports will be computer generated via Viewpoint software system and s/he will be responsible for her/his own reporting. The Consultant Obstetrician in charge of the patient will be informed of all suspicious ultrasound findings and will instruct re need for referral for foetal medicine opinion.
