Apprentice Electrician

Position Overview: As a High Voltage Electrical Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of experienced electricians and technicians. You will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to install, maintain, and repair high voltage electrical systems. The H&MV Electrical Apprenticeship Program provides hands-on training and classroom instruction to help you develop your technical expertise. The Apprenticeship Program will also give you exposure to multiple disciplines including control and protection systems, HV AIS and GIS substation construction, safety compliance, HV switchgear assembly, grid transformer assembly, HV cable jointing, commissioning and asset management (maintenance). Responsibilities: 1. HV Substations: Support in the construction of HV AIS and GIS substations. You would be helping in the construction of earth grid installation, grid transformer assembly, GIS and AIS switchgear assembly, HV circuit breaker and control and protection panel installation. Installation of control and protection cables including glanding and terminations under the guidance of senior HV electricians. 2. Asset Management: Under the supervision of HV service engineers you will participate in the maintenance, testing and repair of HV electrical systems including HV switchgear, HV transformers, protection relay testing, earth testing and LV circuit breaker maintenance. Learn to use specialized testing equipment and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot faults and ensure system integrity. Learn to compile comprehensive testing and maintenance reports. 3. HV Cable Jointing: Under the supervision of HV cable jointers you will participate in the installation of HV cable systems including containment, glanding and termination of various types of HV cable. Learn the proper use of specialised tools and test equipment. Learn to compile installation check sheets and cable test reports. 4. Commissioning: Under the supervision of commissioning engineers you will gain an understanding of commissioning philosophies as well as reading electrical schematic and single line drawings. You will participate in the testing and verification of HV protection systems using specialized testing equipment. 5. Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working with high voltage equipment. Follow established safety procedures, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and organized work environment. Report any hazards or potential risks to senior personnel. 6. Documentation and Reporting: Assist in documenting installation and maintenance activities, including work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered. Keep accurate records of inspections, tests, and repairs. Prepare reports and provide updates to supervisors. 7. Learning and Development: Attend classroom training sessions and workshops to enhance technical knowledge and understanding of high voltage electrical systems. Take part in on-the-job training to acquire practical skills and familiarity with industry best practices. 8. Collaboration: Collaborate with team members – including electricians, technicians, and contractors – to ensure efficient workflow and successful project completion. Compliance with codes and regulations: Familiarize yourself with local, state, and national electrical codes and regulations relevant to high voltage electrical systems. THE ROLE The successful candidate for this Communications Officer position on appointment will be assigned to Corporate Services Section of Longford County Council to the Communications Officer role. This role is multi-faceted role and they will be involved in a variety of disciplines, such as internal communications, external communications, media relations (traditional and social), events, campaigns and customer service. The post presents a range of exciting opportunities to serve the public through the development of clear, informative and citizen focused communications in support of the work of Longford County Council. Remuneration The current salary scale for the post of Communications Officer is € 50,206 - € 60,051 LSI 2 gross per annum (Circular EL 03/2024), the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Circulars. On appointment successful candidates will be placed on the first point of the point of the salary scale. Appointment to a higher point of the salary scale may apply to candidates employed elsewhere in the public service, subject to verification of service history. Remuneration is paid fortnightly by PayPath directly to the employees nominated bank account. The current wage pay cycle may be revised during the period of employment. Remuneration is subject to all statutory deductions, e.g. P.A.Y.E. and P.R.S.I. Increments are paid annually subject to satisfactory attendance, conduct and performance and national agreements. Increments may be withheld if performance, attendance and/or conduct are not satisfactory. 8. Superannuation & Retirement A person who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority who is liable to pay the Class A rate of PRSI contribution will be required in respect of superannuation to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of pensionable remuneration plus 3.5% of net pensionable remuneration (i.e. pensionable remuneration less twice the annual rate of social insurance old age contributory pension payable at the maximum rate to a person with no adult dependant or qualified children). A person who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority who is liable to pay the Class D rate of PRSI contribution will be required in respect of his/her superannuation to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 5% of pensionable remuneration. A person paying Class D rate of PRSI who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority will be required in respect of the Local Government (Spouses and Children's Contributory Pension) Scheme to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of pensionable remuneration in accordance with the terms of the scheme. A person paying Class A rate of PRSI who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority will be required in respect of the Local Government (Spouses and Children's Contributory Pension) Scheme to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of net pensionable remuneration (i.e. pensionable remuneration less twice the annual rate of social insurance old age contributory pension payable at the maximum rate to a person with no adult dependant or qualified children). Employees are admitted to the Superannuation Scheme in accordance with the terms of the Local Government Superannuation (Consolidation) Act, 1998 and the Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004, with effect from date of appointment. This scheme is contributory and provides pension, retirement and death gratuities. In order for a new entrant to the scheme to qualify for a pension, he/she must have served a minimum of two years employment in a local authority. For new entrants under the Single Public Service Pension Scheme, effective from 1st January 2013, superannuation contributions are as follows: 3.5% of net pensionable remuneration and 3% of pensionable remuneration. Pension and retirement lump sum will be based on career-average pay; pensions will be coordinated with the State Pension Contributory The retirement age applicable to an employee is determined in accordance with the rules governing the relevant Superannuation Scheme to which they belong.

Superannuation & Retirement A person who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority who is liable to pay the Class A rate of PRSI contribution will be required in respect of superannuation to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of pensionable remuneration plus 3.5% of net pensionable remuneration (i.e. pensionable remuneration less twice the annual rate of social insurance old age contributory pension payable at the maximum rate to a person with no adult dependant or qualified children). A person who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority who is liable to pay the Class D rate of PRSI contribution will be required in respect of his/her superannuation to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 5% of pensionable remuneration. A person paying Class D rate of PRSI who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority will be required in respect of the Local Government (Spouses and Children's Contributory Pension) Scheme to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of pensionable remuneration in accordance with the terms of the scheme. A person paying Class A rate of PRSI who becomes a pensionable employee of a local authority will be required in respect of the Local Government (Spouses and Children's Contributory Pension) Scheme to contribute to the local authority at the rate of 1.5% of net pensionable remuneration (i.e. pensionable remuneration less twice the annual rate of social insurance old age contributory pension payable at the maximum rate to a person with no adult dependant or qualified children). Employees are admitted to the Superannuation Scheme in accordance with the terms of the Local Government Superannuation (Consolidation) Act, 1998 and the Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004, with effect from date of appointment. This scheme is contributory and provides pension, retirement and death gratuities. In order for a new entrant to the scheme to qualify for a pension, he/she must have served a minimum of two years employment in a local authority. For new entrants under the Single Public Service Pension Scheme, effective from 1st January 2013, superannuation contributions are as follows: 3.5% of net pensionable remuneration and 3% of pensionable remuneration. Pension and retirement lump sum will be based on career-average pay; pensions will be co-ordinated with the State Pension Contributory The retirement age applicable to an employee is determined in accordance with the rules governing the relevant Superannuation Scheme to which they belong. 9. Annual Leave The current annual leave entitlement for Digital Communications Officer is 30 days per annum, in accordance with the Council’s Annual Leave Policy. The Chief Executive of Longford County Council retains autonomy with regard to office closures, (e.g. Christmas Office Closure), any days arising from such closure will be reserved from the employee’s annual leave entitlement. Proposed office closure days will be reviewed and advised to all employees each year. 10. Driver’s Licence & Insurance Longford County Council employees may on occasion be required to use their car on official business. In such situations the employee must hold a current clean driver’s licence and have available adequate means of transport. It is the responsibility of the employee to arrange the appropriate car insurance cover for business use and to indemnify Longford County Council with the indemnity specified on your insurance certificate under the heading “Persons or classes of person who are covered”. Documentation to confirm the appropriate insurance cover will be required to be supplied to the Council on an annual basis. 11. Code of Conduct/Organisation Policies Employees are be required to adhere to all current and future Longford County Council codes of practice including Code of Conduct of Employees and all current and future organisational policies including, but not limited to Health and Safety, Communications, Data Protection, Equality, Staff Mobility, Attendance Management and Use of Electronic Equipment. 12. Training Employees are required to attend and participate fully in training programmes as may be decided by the Council from time to time and to apply their learning in the course of their daily working activities. 13. Health and Safety Regulations Longford County Council as an Employer is obliged to ensure, so far as it is reasonably practicable the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work of all of its employees. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, the County Council has a legal duty to exercise all due care and take all protective and preventative measures to protect the Safety, Health and Welfare of its employees. Naval Service Recruit - General Service

What is a Naval Service Recruit A Naval Service Recruit enlists for General Service in the Other Ranks of the Defence Forces. After successfully completing the initial Recruit Training course a recruit passes out as an Ordinary Seaman and will then go onto their Branch Training Course before becoming qualified as an Able Body sailor in the Naval Service. Who we want Naval Service Recruits go on to form the backbone of the Irish Naval Service. Recruit training is 22 weeks in duration and is designed to develop a physically fit, disciplined and motivated person using basic military and naval skills in order to prepare them for further training in the Service. Recruits are instilled with the Naval Service ethos and the values of Courage, Respect, Integrity and Loyalty. On successful completion of the Recruit training, the Recruit is advanced to the training rank of Ordinary Rating (equivalent of 2 Star Private in the Army). The Naval Service has four Branches consisting of Seaman's, Communications, Mechanicians and Supplies. The Ordinary Rate commences their chosen Branch training giving them the specialised skills required to fulfil their role at sea and ashore. After this initial specialisation training, the Ordinary Rate will proceed to sea and take up an appointment onboard one of our ships for a two year rotation. Life at sea is at all times varied. The Ordinary Rate regardless of Branch is a much valued member of the ships crew. As well as Branch duties, he/she will be called on to complete other duties such as general maintenance, boat work, Damage Control/Firefighting. He/she may also be a member of a Naval Boarding team during Drug Interdiction Operations. If you are interested in a life at sea, as part of a dynamic, professional and highly motivated team, then the Naval Service is for you. Qualifications No formal education qualifications are required to join the Defence Forces as a recruit. You need to satisfy the Interview Board and the Recruiting Officer that you possess a sufficient standard of education for service in the Defence Forces. Induction Recruit Competitions are held in the Naval Service as required. This is the only way to join the Naval Service to become an Ordinary Seaman. Candidates undergo fitness testing, an interview and a medical exam. The Induction Process will determine if you have the potential to become an Ordinary Seaman in the Naval Service. Training The Recruit Training Syllabus is designed to produce a physically fit, disciplined and motivated Ordinary Seaman with basic military skills. Naval Recruit training is foundation military training. It is 22 weeks in duration. It is followed by Trained Specialist Training courses. On successful completion of training Recruits are assigned to a Branch and a vessel of the Naval Service. Career Progression Newly qualified Ordinary Seamen are encouraged to put themselves forward for further courses in the Naval Service. These courses may enable the Seaman to specialise in certain areas of the Naval Service and progress towards career advancement.
