Laboratory Shift Lead

What does this role involve? In co-operation with the RCLS Lab Managers and Shift Managers, the Shift Lead is responsible for the day to day running of the laboratory. Some of the key duties include: 1) The smooth and efficient running of the Randox Clinical Laboratory Services ensuring that all laboratory based testing for clinical diagnostics and clinical trial samples is conducted accurately in conjunction with Randox standard operating procedures and in-line with ISO/IEC 17025 (2005), and MHRA Good Clinical Practice guidelines. 2) The supervision of staff and the allocation of duties including: - The performance of various analytical procedures used in analysis of clinical trial samples and clinical diagnostics. - The routine maintenance and calibration of analytical instrumentation. - Analysis and submission of all appropriate clinical proficiency testing programs. 3) Ensuring that all members of the team are performing optimally according to their level. 4) The training and development of staff and the conducting of regular training reviews and Appraisals. 5) Providing advice and guidance on technical issues associated with clinical diagnostic testing and analysis of clinical trial samples. 6) To ensure best practice in the provision of a clinical diagnostic service and to keep up to date with latest developments and trends in clinical diagnostics. 7) Ensuring that the analytical facilities and testing equipment provided by RCLS are maintained and developed in line with market and regulatory needs. Essential criteria: Qualified to at least degree level in Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Immunology or a Life Science. Experience in diagnostic testing and reagent applications. Previous laboratory experience. Excellent communication and organisational skills. Strong leaderships skills and a high level of self-motivation. Knowledge of a variety of software packages including Microsoft packages such as Excel, Outlook and Word. What does this role involve? Responsible for managing the people, resources and performance of their assigned shift within the regional Randox Clinical Laboratory Services (RCLS) laboratory, ensuring that testing is completed accurately, safely and to the required turnaround time. The post-holder holds overall accountability for shift level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC performance, instrument downtime and backlog — taking direct action to resolve issues in real time and is reports to the Regional Laboratory Manager for the shift's overall results. PERFORMANCE OWNERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY ● Manage the people, resources and overall performance of the assigned shift, holding accountability for productivity, quality, turnaround time and safety, and reporting directly to the Regional Laboratory Manager on results achieved. ● Own shift-level KPIs — productivity, error rates, QC pass rate, repeat/re-test rate, instrument downtime and sample backlog — driving corrective action in real time whenever performance falls short of target. ● Act as incident lead for the shift, owning the initial response to any incident raised and coordinating other departments through to resolution, keeping the Regional Laboratory Manager informed throughout. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES ● Manage the day-to-day running of the shift, ensuring adequate staff cover, effective allocation of equipment and consumables, and adherence to standard operating procedures throughout. ● Coordinate with Clinics during the shift on sample collection, courier and specimen queries, ensuring issues affecting sample receipt or turnaround are resolved promptly. ● Coordinate with Customer Support during the shift on client queries, urgent requests and result-reporting issues, ensuring the shift's response supports client service commitments. ● Investigate root causes of testing errors, non-conformances and elevated repeat/re-test rates, taking direct corrective action to reduce recurrence. ● Ensure sample integrity, chain of custody and correct handling procedures are maintained throughout the shift. ● Monitor stock and consumable levels during the shift, flagging shortages to the Regional Laboratory Manager in good time to avoid disruption to testing. ● Ensure all testing carried out during the shift complies with RCLS standard operating procedures and applicable standards, including ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, GCP and MHRA Good Clinical Practice. Essential criteria: Qualified to degree level in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry or a related Life Science, or equivalent relevant laboratory experience. Proven experience working in a clinical diagnostic or clinical trials laboratory environment. Experience supervising or leading others, whether in a formal management role or as a senior/lead analyst. Excellent verbal and written communication skills Proficiency with standard software packages (Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel) and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
