Job Purpose: (i) To assist the lecturer with the support and care of students with special needs, e.g., enable access to the curriculum; attend to personal needs including dietary, feeding, toileting, etc. (ii) To undertake a range of administrative duties associated with learning support provision across the College. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Classroom Duties and Allied Tasks Support student learning in class and/or during study time by providing high-quality learning support, including: Accompany students to and from class. Notetaking in class. Liaison with lecturing staff on the student’s behalf as requested by the student. Acting as reader/writer in examinations as required. Helping students use appropriate literature to assist them with their work, either in a group or on an individual basis. Reading aloud and/or recording relevant chapters of textbooks. Give practical help, where required, to those students who have a range of learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities. Liaise with the Student Engagement and Support Officers regarding additional support needs of students. Supervise and assist student(s) at break and lunch time as required. Assist with First Aid/Fire Evacuation procedures as required. Assist students in accessing all parts of the College building and facilities. Undertake a range of administrative duties associated with learning support provision across the College. Provide support to Lecturing Staff within the learning environment. Undertake other relevant duties as assigned by the Line Manager. Specific Learning Difficulty Classroom Support / Special Educational Needs Assist the lecturer with the support and care of students with special needs, e.g., enable access to the curriculum; attend to personal needs including dietary, feeding, toileting, etc. Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the student(s) to be supported. Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan), participate in the evaluation of the support, and encourage student(s) participation in such programmes. Assist with operational difficulties and non-invasive medical/clinical difficulties pertaining to student(s) disabilities. Assist student(s) in moving around college and on and off transport. Give practical help, where required, to those students who have a range of learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities. Undertake other relevant duties as assigned by the Line Manager. General Duties The post holder is expected to: Act as Duty Manager on a rotational basis for nominated campuses as part of a team. Support the Technical Services Manager in the management of delegated functional budgets and resources to ensure targets are met. Develop benchmarks for the effective evaluation of the College’s Desktop Services team. Participate, as required, in the recruitment and selection of staff for the College in accordance with procedures. Abide by the College’s Code of Conduct and seek to promote the College positively at all times. Qualifications & Experience Hold GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or above (or equivalent). Previous experience of supporting people with disabilities/additional needs. Hold or be willing to work towards a Level 2 Qualification in childcare or relevant subject as approved by the Education Authority. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Good written communication skills. Confident in use of ICT including Microsoft Office Products. Desirable Criteria / Skills Experience of supporting people with disabilities/additional needs in an educational setting. A valid First Aid certificate or willingness to undertake the 3-day First Aid training after appointment. Experience in using Assistive Technologies. Terms and Conditions Salary: Band 3 points 5-6 (£24,790 per annum pro rata). Commencing at £13.20 per hour. Contract Type: Temporary, 1-year contract with possible extension/permanency. Hours of Work: Full-time or part-time; up to 32.5 hours per week. Working Pattern: 8.45am – 3.15pm or per student timetable if different. Location: Cookstown and Dungannon. Travel to all campus sites may be required. Holiday Entitlement: 12 public holidays plus 23 days pro rata, rising to 29 days after 5 years’ continuous service. Pension: In accordance with NJC terms and conditions; postholder automatically enrolled in the NILGOSC pension scheme, offering benefits commensurate with public sector pension schemes.
