Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician 2-Year Apprenticeship Programme
THE COMPETITION Clare County Council is currently inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the above competition. Clare County Council will, following the interview process, form a panel for the post of Apprenticeship Civil Engineering Technician from which future relevant vacancies may be filled. Positions will be offered in order of merit as per the panel. This panel will exist for 12 months and may be extended for a further period of 6-12 months at the discretion of the Chief Executive. JOB DESCRIPTION The successful candidate will be required to complete workplace learning in an apprenticeship engineering position within Clare County Council. They will also be required to attend off site training at a recognised college they will be assigned through SOLAS throughout their qualification (QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Civil Engineering). On completion of the apprenticeship programme the successful candidate will have experience in the following areas: Engineering Practices, Mathematic & Scientific Techniques, Information Technology, Design & Development and Business Information. ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE FOR THE ROLE Willingness to learn and take guidance from technical staff and apprenticeship mentors when carrying out duties will be a requirement of the role. Successful candidates will be required to complete work-based learning. The person employed will be required to perform assigned duties exercising a duty of care, in the interest of safety of oneself, fellow employees and the general public, at all times in compliance with Clare County Council’s Health & Safety Management System. The apprentice will also adhere to the Apprenticeship Code of Practice DUTIES The duties to be assigned include the following although this list is not exhaustive and may be reviewed from time to time as organisational needs require. Such duties will include (as per the SOLAS National Apprenticeship – Civil Engineering Technician – Occupational Profile): Typical Tasks/ Responsibilities: 1. Exercise technical judgement at an appropriate level and maintain accurate records. 2. Apply suitable mathematical techniques to solve well-defined problems in civil engineering and present the solution in an appropriate form. 3. Use test and measurement instrumentation applicable to civil engineering (materials test equipment, Total Station, GPS etc.). 4. Use industry standard software tools to gather data, solve well-defined civil engineering problems and display the result, (AutoCAD/BIM/Revit etc). 5. Communicate well-defined technical matters effectively to other technical personnel and liaise with other third parties. 6. Give direction to others and manage material and machine resources. 7. Understand the need for high ethical standards in the practice of engineering, including the responsibilities of the engineering profession towards people and the environment. 8. Accept and exercise personal and professional responsibility. 9.Exercise and apply time management. 10. Create and apply safe working practices (in line with current Safety and Health Legislation). ESSENTIAL CRITERIA 1. Character Each candidate must be of good character. 2. Health Candidates shall be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. 3. Education, Training, Experience, etc. To undertake this apprenticeship, you must: Hold a QQI Level 5 (Leaving Certificate or equivalent) qualification and Have a Pass Grade in Maths at Level 5 (or Equivalent). Applicants awaiting Leaving Cert results may apply. Please provide details of subjects in the education section of application form. It should be noted that these are the current approved minimum educational requirements for apprenticeship programmes. However, previous experience of the following subjects would be an advantage but not essential: Mathematics, Technical Drawing/Graphics, Metalwork, Technology and Physics. *Non-Irish Qualifications must be accompanied by a determination from Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) to establish their comparability against the Irish National Framework of Qualifications, overseas qualifications must also be accompanied by a translation document. Failure to input and upload proof of essential educational qualifications in your application form will deem you ineligible for this competition. 4. Age Each candidate must be over 18 years of age on or before 31st August 2025. 5. Desirable Criteria Applicants should have: • An interest in Civil Engineering and the built environment. • An interest in Mathematics and problem solving. • Solid literacy, verbal, and numeracy skills. • Ability to plan and prepare work. • Good analytical and problem-solving skills. • Good computer skills. • Good interpersonal skills. • Be safety focused. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 6. Citizenship: Candidates must, by the date of any job offer, be: (a) A citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway; or (b) A citizen of the United Kingdom (UK); or (c) A citizen of Switzerland pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons; or (d) A non-EEA citizen who is a spouse or child of an EEA or UK or Swiss citizen and has a stamp 4 visa; or (e) A person awarded international protection under the International Protection Act 2015, or any family member entitled to remain in the State as a result of family reunification and has a stamp 4 visa or (f) A non-EEA citizen who is a parent of a dependent child who is a citizen of, and resident in, an EEA member state or the UK or Switzerland and has a stamp 4 visa. Salary: The salary shall be fully inclusive and may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy. The current salary scale for Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician is €1,053.94 per fortnight / €27,497 per annum. Annual Leave: The current annual leave entitlement is 8% of hours worked. Clare County Council’s holiday year runs from 1st January to 31st December. Granting of annual leave, payment for annual leave and arrangements for public holidays will be governed by the provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1977 (as amended). Working Hours: When attending the on-the-job phases with Clare County Council, the post-holder will be required to work a 7-hour day. Lunch Break is 30 minutes. The provisions of Clare County Council’s Leave Policy is applicable on a pro rata basis. On successful completion, the apprentice(s) will obtain a recognised level 6 qualification and be fully competent in the role of a Sports turf technician. ConcraWood will support the apprentice(s) throughout their learning journey by engaging line managers and facilitating mentor one-to-ones on a regular basis. The apprentice(s) will complete off site block release training programme carried out by Teagasc. Attendance for this off-site training is compulsory where apprentice(s) will attend classes, practical’s, labs and field trips while off-the-job. Examinations will take place also in this period.
