Environmental Health Officer
Salary: PO1; SCP 29 – 32; £38,626 - £41,511 per annum Main Purpose of Job: To undertake a range of responsibilities and duties to protect and improve the health and well being of those who live, work and visit the District by: • Enforcing all relevant statutory provisions which fall within the remit of the Environmental Health Service. • Addressing inequalities in health by working in partnership with a range of statutory and non statutory stakeholders. • Identifying needs within the business and residential community relating to Environmental Health matters; to devise, plan and participate in training and information campaigns to promote awareness of legislative requirements and health issues. Main Responsibilities: • To carry out inspections, audits and risk assessments of premises and activities on a proactive and reactive basis across the range of environmental health functions to achieve compliance with legislative requirements. • To devise and implement essential sampling programmes and surveys. Use professional judgement to identify and investigate additional sampling requirements. Interpret these results and ensure appropriate action is taken. • To investigate complaints across the range of environmental health functions and initiate appropriate actions including preparation and service of statutory notices, fixed penalties etc on proprietors, company secretaries of commercial and industrial operations and members of the public, under the appropriate legislation and where necessary prepare prosecution cases in accordance with council procedures. • To investigate any incidents of infectious disease, food poisoning, infestation, insanitary conditions, accidents in the workplace and pollution incidents and initiate appropriate action. • Act as a witness and provide evidence in criminal and civil courts, public enquiries, tribunals, planning enquiries and appeals. • Devise and deliver appropriate education programmes to businesses and the community. Participate in health improvement activities and work in partnership with internal and external stakeholders. • Maintain and update knowledge of professional, technical and legislative developments across environmental health functions and provide advice to the Head of Environmental Health and PEHOs. • Prepare documented evidence, compile reports, maintain appropriate records and carry out administrative tasks associated with the duties and responsibilities of the post.
