The successful candidate will be required to start on 14th July 2025. This role will involve rotating between medical specialities to cover sick leave absences. Clinical Nurse/midwife Manager, University Maternity Hospital
Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) incorporates the Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Neonatology Services within the Health Service Executive South catering for approximately 7,000 births per annum and is a tertiary referral centre. CUMH is a site for clinical placements for student midwives and student nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered in partnership with University College Cork. The Theatre suite has four operating theatres which caters for approximately 3500 cases per year; two obstetric theatres, where elective and emergency caesarean sections are carried out, and two gynaecology theatres. There is also a recovery room and a high dependency unit where women with complications of gynaecology & pregnancy can be looked after in an appropriate environment. Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: · Integrated, locally planned and delivered · Easier to access and navigate · Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically-based units with clearly defined populations. CUH has very strong relationships with each of the six schools within the Science Faculty of UCC and this is a key area for future development to maximise the opportunities for both the service and academia. CUH is a designated Major Trauma Centre for the Republic of Ireland due to the wide range of specialties delivered by the hospital – including Neurosciences, Cardiac Services, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Renal, Internal Medicine, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Maxillary-Facial, Paediatrics, Intensive Care, Oncology, Haematology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatology and Emergency Medicine. Purpose of the Post The CUH Paediatric Respiratory service is a regional/tertiary referral service for conditions including asthma, cystic fibrosis, sleep medicine, non-invasive and invasive long-term ventilation, neuromuscular respiratory disease, primary ciliary dyskinesia/non-CF bronchiectasis, long-term oxygen therapy and the full range of general respiratory conditions. Referrals are accepted from Paediatricians across the HSE South West region; Paediatricians/Surgeons in CHI Ireland; GPs and ED/Paediatric Assessment Units. Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood affecting up to one in five children throughout their life. Acute asthma exacerbations are one of the most common reasons for children to be referred to paediatric out-patient clinics, and to present to the Emergency Dept, and to require hospital admission. Many such admissions are double to treble the average length of stay. The CNS Children’s Asthma will deliver biologic therapy for severe asthma –approximately 120 subcutaneous injection doses administered in 2024 with patient reviews every 2-4 weeks; commence immunotherapy for severe grass pollen allergy (currently approximately 25 patients per year) and perform Pulmonary Function Tests at Asthma/Respiratory consultant clinics and nurse led clinics. The CNS post holder will deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008. Caseload The CNS will focus initially on the following service user groups: Children from birth to 16 years of age.
