DNCC Clinical Nurse Specialist, Substance Abuse Service Specific To Youth
The Substance Abuse Service Specific to Youth (SASSY) team covers all Dublin North City and County (pop. approx. 600,000) and provides a service for the assessment and treatment of all addiction behaviours for young people under the age of 18. The service manages the most high risk cases in relation to substance misuse, high risk aggressive and forensic behaviours, mental illness and self- harm- often involving courts and special or secure care services. The service offers a comprehensive outpatient treatment to clients. It is a Tier 3 multi-disciplinary outpatient service (Department of Health and Children, 2005). The broad aims of the service are: - To ensure that appropriate services / treatment are provided to young people with substance use disorders. - To demonstrably reduce the harm caused by substance misuse to young people. - To develop the capacity of service users to solve their own difficulties. - To provide education to young people in relation to substance misuse issues. - To establish through rigorous scientific research appropriate interventions for the target client group. - To provide a specialist consultancy service to relevant professionals that will support them in developing their skills in treating the target population. The service is led by a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist. Other disciplines in the team include counsellors and a part-time family therapist. The service has a systemic focus and views family participation in treatment as very important. Team members require the skills to build and maintain relationships with family members and other carers. As young people are also involved with a range of other services such as TUSLA, Probation, Education Welfare and Youth services, team members have skills in interagency working.
