The post will be based at St. James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin. This post will be located in the Discipline of Clinical Medicine, St. James’s Hospital, reporting to the Head of Discipline and the Head of School of Medicine. The Vision Cardiovascular disease is the biggest cause of death in Ireland. St. James’s Hospital Cardiology is the largest unit in the country, with Primary PCI remit on call for 1.2 million citizens, a valve programme which pioneered the first public hospital TAVI service, a large heart failure unit, state of the art Cardiac MRI/CT and nuclear imaging, and on-site cardiac surgery. The Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICVS) was set up in 2006 under the guidance of the late Professor Michael Walsh, TCD/St. James’s under the aegis of Trinity College Dublin. It resides under the governance structures of TCD within the Discipline of Medicine, with Professor Joe Keane as the current head of Discipline. It is a partnership between the College and its two main teaching hospitals, Tallaght University Hospital and St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. The Institute is one of a number of joint initiatives being undertaken by the founding institutions to develop their research capability in areas where they have significant academic and clinical strengths. The ICVS was opened by the Minister for Health at the time, Dr Leo Varadkar in 2013 at the St. James’s site. The ICVS at St. James’s/TCD is ideally placed in a University setting, but off the corridor of the busiest clinical cardiology unit in Ireland. There is a strong interventional, structural and imaging clinical faculty. New imaging techniques (CT, MRI and optical coherence tomography) can be used to optimize new designs, tease out clinical problems for patients and allow for collaborative international development for the safe and effective creation of new cardiovascular therapies. Collaboration and Networking: 1. Locally with the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI). TTMI, formerly the Institute of Molecular Medicine has been at the forefront of Irish molecular research and development since its foundation in 2001 by Professor Dermot Kelleher, and through its facilities and expertise, cardiology bench research has matured over the last decade. A 4,000m2 multi-disciplinary research Institute, TTMI houses core facilities in bio- banking, immunology, high level genomics, functional genomic, proteomic and high content screening capacity. TTMI is a partner in the RNAi Global Initiative in collaboration with Dharmacon Therapeutics. The Institute has a full siRNA genomic library with capacity for advanced screening technologies. CV therapeutics are been increasingly seen as needing molecular signatures with SNP panels to guide therapeutic response to antiplatelet agents post stenting. The in-house concentration of molecular techniques and ambitious education programmes has fostered a highly productive atmosphere for PhD students, MD students and post-doctoral molecular and genetic research. 2. The Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAMI) opened in 2008. The remit of the centre is to carry out cutting-edge research in Cardiac, Oncology and Neuropsychiatry Imaging. Research focuses on 3 broad areas; high resolution structural imaging, functional imaging, and disease response. The centre houses a 3-T MRI research system which offers unrivalled spatial and temporal resolution for detection and assessment of severity of vascular disease. Approximately 1/3 of the proposed activity of CAMI was dedicated to cardiology research. Research interests include cardiomyopathies, ischaemia, effects of HIV and various drugs on the heart, and sudden cardiac death pathologies. 4. The Trinity Centre for Bioengineering is a dynamic and innovating cross-link between the University and new device technology. Device development, valve design and stent innovation can be implemented in a colloborative fashion with the TCB and we anticipate intense feed-on to the TCB after bench development in new generation design so crucial to the long tern safety and efficacy of cardiovascular innovation. 5. The Centre for Successful Ageing under the aegis of Professor Rose Anne Kenny has established TCD as a prime location for population based Cardiovadcular research. The new CSA Building opened in 2015 and is contuguous and linked to the Institite for Cardiovascular Science. The synergies of research focus are clear and the technolgical edge provided by the ICVS and the successful cabndidate to may seek to work with the ground up community based infrastrucure of the CSA. 6. The newly developed National Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Network, (NCSRN) at the Irish Heart Foundation seeks to create a national level collaborative shopfront for CV Research and the appointment of a senior international level clinical trialist would provide a nidus for such activity.
