The project will involve an array of approaches, including analysis of short- and long-read high-throughput sequencing data, bacterial and phage genomics and metagenomics, analysis of random transposon insertion libraries. The role requires an exceptional knowledge and skill set spanning bioinformatics/computational biology, bacterial and phage genetics and genomics, and microbiome science. The project will use as a basis Tyndall’s in-house piezoMEMS microfabrication platform. In these projects the WSN group is carrying out  multi-disciplinary research projects in both applied and fundamental research activities  associated with Wearable Smart Systems integration, embedded computing, and edge analytics. In particular, the WSN research group at Tyndall has recently received significant funding from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI) as part of its  Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) for the HOLISTICS project.  HOLISTICS will connect Irish-based companies (SME & MNC) in the Med-tech, Sports Science, ICT and Design/Human Factors Engineering sectors with leading Irish Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) and Clinicians to exploit state-of-the-art hardware, software, data analytics and visualization technologies for wearable systems. HOLISTICS builds on several years of engagement between Tyndall and Irish companies to address disruptive business opportunities in Health-Tech as well as significant experience in driving large scale Research & Innovation programs. The WSN group is looking to recruit a number of Applications Engineers to develop the necessary hardware and software system prototypes for test and validation with clinical partners in the HOLISTICs project in the delivery of disruptive research in  wearable systems for healthcare. BC-64 Principal Scientist- Heterogeneous Integration of III-V and Silicon Photonics Contract Type: Full Time/Fixed Term As Tyndall’s Principal Scientist for Heterogeneous Integration of III-V and Silicon Photonics you will drive a cutting-edge research programme that will address some of the outstanding challenges in photonic-electronic integration in order to deliver new technology solutions for applications ranging from smart medical devices to advanced communication systems. In particular, you will develop a new research team to advance one of the leading emerging technologies for large scale photonic-electronic integration, namely Micro-Transfer Printing (MTP).  A key focus of the research will be the integration of III-V active devices (lasers, modulators, detectors etc.), together with active and passive silicon photonic ICs and associated electronic ICs using MTP . The research will be enabled by Tyndall’s advanced fabrication, characterisation and test facilities, which include all of the elements needed for the programme, including a dedicated MTP tool. Working initially under the guidance of the Head of the III-V Devices Group, you will be expected to lead a number of existing projects whilst also growing your own independent funding and research streams in order to develop a dedicated team of highly skilled research staff and PhD students. You will join the Photonics Centre at Tyndall, a vibrant and expanding world-class research ecosystem comprising more than 150 researchers with activities that include photonic theory, III-V and III-Nitride material epitaxy, photonic integration, hybrid integration and packaging, microelectronics, biophotonics and communication systems. You will be expected to develop collaborations across the centre as well internationally through programmes such as the European Horizon 2020 funding framework and its successors. Tyndall also hosts the Science Foundation Ireland Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) a €30M initiative with 30 industry partners, including large multinationals and indigenous companies and start-ups. You will join IPIC as a funded investigator where, in addition to advancing photonic integration science and engineering, you will have the opportunity to lead a number of research collaborations with industry partners to advance the technology towards market deployment. In order to achieve this, Tyndall seeks a highly motivated and dynamic individual with a proven track record of research excellence and achievement in photonic integration research, including a deep knowledge of III-V and/or silicon photonic device design and fabrication. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas.  As part of the SFI Centre CONFIRM – Centre for Smart Manufacturing, the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) group at Tyndall has secured funding in the development of Energy Harvesting systems for “Industry 4.0”. These systems will leverage our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough wireless sensing systems for use in a manufacturing environment. Energy Harvesting for Industry 4.0 The advent of the 4th industrial revolution brings forward some new challenges in manufacturing and automation. Industrial Internet of Things applications use data collected by physical things to minimise manufacturing mistakes and reduce the production cost. However, the “things” are usually deployed in inaccessible places imposing high maintenance cost regarding their battery replacement or costly long cablings. To this end, the project will focus on the development of a wireless power transfer mechanism, such as the RF-power emission from dedicated chargers, to replenish energy while guaranteeing the high reliability and robustness of an industrial network. The successful Postdoctoral Researcher will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an adaptive MAC protocol that will allow RF-power emission of dedicated chargers to power-up energy-constrained IoT devices taking into account potential interference with data transmissions. The successful applicant will carry out his research project within this team which has expertise in Energy Harvesting, microsystems technology, wireless networks, electronics and low-power system hardware and software design. Activities will include applied domain focused research into Energy Harvesting, Industry 4.0, deployment of electronic sensing systems, hardware/software co-design and integration of embedded systems incorporating data processing and machine/deep learning algorithms for Industry 4.0. The candidate will be expected to write scientific publications associated with their work and travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings. This will help to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading industry-focused applied research group in the area of smart system development for Human Computer Interfacing in an industrial context. The successful Postdoc Researcher will help define, manage and implement an applied research project as part of a team of multi-disciplinary industry-aligned researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low-power system hardware and communications software design. The Researcher will help develop prototype and test the next generation Energy Harvesting Systems in conjunction with industry partners.
