Basic Function of the Role: The appointee will assist with the development of new Clover profit index and in the redevelopment of the Pasture Profit Index. These developments will require the generation of plot grazing studies for both species. It will also require the interrogation of datasets from the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine. It will also involve analysis of on farm grass variety evaluation data from Pasturebase Ireland. The appointee will liaise daily with commercial grassland farmers to ensure the capture of high quality data electronically through the application of best grassland management technologies. Background to the Role: The VistaMilk SFI Research Centre represents a unique collaboration between Agri-Food and ICT research institutes and leading Irish/multinational food and ICT companies. The Centre is hosted by Teagasc, the national agency with responsibility for agriculture and food research, in partnership with the Tyndall National Institute, the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (at UCD, NUIG, DCU). Basic Function & Background to the Role: The EBSTAR project (Efficient Biotransformation of Underutilised and Waste Food Processing Streams into Alternative and Renewable Products) is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and aims to adopt a microbial biotransformation approach to the valorisation of waste streams from the dairy industry.  The primary focus of this position is to develop a prototype biorefinery system for the valorisation of dairy processing waste streams for the production of value-added products. The position will require experience in microbial physiology and characterisation and hands-on experience of working with bioreactors and fermentation technology, as well as knowledge of strain engineering approaches, the bio-based economy, sustainable production and the smart use of biomass. In addition to working with the main project partners, Teagasc and Cork Institute of Technology, the successful candidate will also have an opportunity to work with project partners at Lund University and University College Cork to develop their skills in industrial biotechnology and life cycle analysis. The Teagasc post-doctoral programme provides training and development opportunities for early career scientists that enhances their experience of learning and equips them with the necessary skills for the next stage of their chosen career in research.  The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Food Bioscience in Teagasc’s Food Programme.
