Ornua has a fabulous new Research & Development laboratory based in the National Food Innovation Hub in Teagasc Moorepark, Co. Cork. Supporting a team of researchers, the laboratory technician will optimise the functioning of the laboratory and learn in a culture of achieving great things together. We are looking for someone who has an interest in science and food (especially milk products). Someone who is interested in working in a hands-on environment but is willing to use a laptop and Microsoft office. Do you enjoy following processes and getting the process right time after time? At the end of the two-year apprenticeship, we would expect the successful candidate to: • Be trained to work safely in a laboratory environment. • Understand the health and safety hazards of the Ornua laboratory. • Be adept at using personal protective equipment. • Understand the principles of good laboratory practice. • Be able to test milk powder, cheese, and butter. • Understand the chemical and scientific principles behind the testing. • Be able to operate, maintain and calibrate routine laboratory equipment from pH meters, to incubators, to using specialised laboratory equipment for the testing of dairy products. • Record and review analytical data and report on results. • Maintain the laboratory, doing daily checks, ordering consumables so they do not run out, ensuring that annual maintenance is planned and carried out on various equipment and systems. Working with a diverse group of R&D researchers on interesting and varied projects the apprentice should get a great introduction to laboratory work during the two-year placement. What it takes to be a Vehicle Body Repairer? •Be physically active •Must pass a colour-vision test •Aptitude for handling tools and equipment •Mechanical aptitude •Problem solving & critical thinking skills •Patient and have great attention to detail The Vehicle Body Repairer will report to the Workshop Manager. What does a Vehicle Body Repairer do? A Vehicle Body Repairers’ work is practical, hands on work involves straightening bent bodies, removing dents, and replacing crumpled parts that are beyond repair. They repair all types of vehicles. Vehicle Body Repairs use special equipment to restore damaged metals frames and body equipment. They remove badly damaged panels with a pneumatic metal cutting gun and weld in replacement sections. They pull out minor dents with a hydraulic jack or knock them out with hand-tools or pneumatic hammers. They remove small pits in the panel with pick hammers and punches. Vehicle Body Repairers may also work on plastic panels using a hot air welding gun or install windscreens. Once the repair work has been completed, the vehicle must be prepared for repainting. Power sanders and sandpapers are used to remove the original paint or rust, and small nicks and scratches are filled with body putty. Parts that do not need painting such as headlights or windows are removed or masked. The amount of paint required is calculated, the paint is mixed to match the desired colour and tested with a viscosity meter to make sure that it is at the right consistency. Vehicle Body Repairs use a spray gun to apply both the primer and final coats of paint. After the final coat is applied, the vehicle is polished. In some cases, the Vehicle Body Repairer will also deal directly with the customer and give estimates on the cost of the work. How do I become a Vehicle Body Repairer? The route to this exiting career is through a four- year learning apprenticeship. Most of your learning is on the job in the garage or workshop with Master Vehicle Body Repairers, with 3 phases of full time off the job study totalling 42 weeks. The first phase of full time study is with an ETB (Educational Training Board), the second and third with an Institute or College, such as an IT. The minimum entry requirement is at that you are at least 16 years old and have at least a grade D in any 5 subjects in the Junior Certificate (or equivalent grades in other approved examinations). Some employers will look for more than this- up to Leaving Certificate. Maths, physics, technical drawing, metal work, technology and engineering are particularly relevant school subjects.

We are currently recruiting for Industrial Insulation apprentices nationwide. Are you interested in commencing a career as an apprentice Industrial Insulator? What is Industrial Insulation? The Industrial insulator's job involves measuring, cutting and fitting a variety of insulation materials to pipes, valves, pressure vessels, tanks, ducting, flues or on any hot or cold surfaces for the purpose of thermal insulation, fireproofing or soundproofing. It also involves the cladding of the insulation material with suitable coverings such as sheet metal, aluminium, zinc, stainless steel or other specified coverings and finishes, such as, felt, cement, various rubbers, canvas and foils Metal cladding involves pattern layout and development of sheet metal (mild steel, galvanised mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other alloys) up to 1.2 mm and the use of various machines. These patterns would include pipe work, vessels, domed ends, valve and flange boxes, tee pieces, reducers, transformers etc. The patterns are then fabricated by hand and with the aid of machines. They are then joined and assembled using self-securing joints, riveting, fasteners, flanging, swaging and banding suited to the appropriate finishing techniques. Non-metallic finishing may be joined by adhesives, banding or strapping as appropriate. With the onset of new technology, modern cutting and cladding involves the use of CNC machinery. Planning, costing/estimating, quality control and environmental considerations (energy conservation) are areas in which the Industrial Insulating will operate to ensure cost effectiveness throughout the industry. On successful completion of their training, apprentices become recognised craftspeople in Ireland. The apprentices are registered as qualified craftsperson by SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority.
