Job Purpose: The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Gastroenterology will demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and skills to improve the quality of patient care. The post holder will support the on-going development of the Gastroenterology service and be responsible for ensuring the delivery of specialist nursing within the service. The CNS in Gastroenterology will focus primarily on patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) i.e. Crohns Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The number of patients currently accessing the IBD service at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is >1600, and this number is rapidly expanding. The CNS co-ordinates care and will liaise between patients, families and the multidisciplinary team. Telephone and email advice may be given to clients on how to manage their condition and also providing rapid access to OPD. Individual cases are discussed at the bi-monthly multi-disciplinary team meetings and a monthly combined Medical/Surgical IBD Clinics, where treatment plans are devised.
