Hours of work: Full time (37 hours) Closing Date: 12 noon 23/08/2019 Position Summary: NHISSOT is the national transplant immunology service for solid organ transplantation. It provides a HLA typing, HLA antibody screening and crossmatching service for the six national solid organ transplant programmes. This position requires an experienced scientist in the field of transplantation to ensure the development of the service and to manage the changes necessary to achieve the department's organisational and quality objectives. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: •To perform his/her duties under the general direction of the Chief Medical Scientist. •To perform all aspects of technical work to the highest standard •To supervise and provide guidance and support to medical scientists and medical laboratory assistants in the performance of their duties. •To organise the technical programme so that work patterns are efficiently maintained. •To carry out routine inspections of laboratory equipment in his/her charge and to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition. •To collaborate with the Chief Medical Scientist and Consultant Immunologist in the maintenance of efficiency and the introduction of new methods in the laboratory. •To assist in implementing measures for the safety, health and welfare of all the staff. •To assist in maintaining the European Federation for Immunogenetics accredited status of the department. •To organise, monitor, assess and report on the appropriate Internal and External QA schemes. •To represent the Chief Medical Scientist at meetings when required. •To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge. •Achievement of laboratory and personal objectives is facilitated by joint review. •To ensure that statistical and management information is provided when required. •Any other duties as appropriate to the grade and qualifications. Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Mandatory: Candidates for appointment must possess: a) Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) orJoint University College Cork – Cork Institute of Technology course. Or b) Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or c) Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002). Or d) An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM). e) And possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine; • MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology. • MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College. • MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster. • MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology / University College Cork. • MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology / University of Dublin, Trinity College. Or f) Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999). g) Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years’ clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist. h) Possess experience in the field of solid organ transplantation. i) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
