It is the national tertiary referral centre for the management of spinal injuries and cardiothoracic surgery, including heart and lung transplantation. It is a designated cancer centre and has regional gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, neurology and dermatology services. In association with University College Dublin the Mater is part of the Ireland East Health Group. The Cellular Pathology Department is accredited ISO15189 Standards and provides a broad spectrum of diagnostic testing and acts as a referral laboratory for the investigation and management of patients with a variety of disorders. Areas of specialist expertise within the laboratory include Cytology, Histology, Histochemistry, Immunohistochemistry and In-situ Hybridisation, and Molecular Diagnostics.
