Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed term position as a Research Assistant with Anatomy, School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by NUIG and is available from 8 July 2019 to contract end date of 31 December 2019. A call for one research assistant with six months funding is open in the research group of Professor Garry Duffy at NUI Galway. This position is part of a large multidisciplinary project focused on new treatments for Type 1 diabetes. We are currently at the preclinical stage of assessment of the Duffy lab technologies and we require the support of a research assistant to aid in the design, production and assessment of devices. Job Description: The successful candidate will provide research assistant support to the Duffy Lab as they assess the device/tissue interface of novel cell therapy reservoirs after implantation. Duties: · Work and collaborate in a team with broad expertise in areas associated with medical device development · Contribute to the development of the device · Manufacture and test devices · Submit report and invention disclosure · Carry out gross anatomical inspection of the device on explant · Process samples for ex vivo CT and MRI · Image using CT and MRI · Analyse image data and correlate to histology · Prepare histological samples for light, confocal and multi-photon microscopy · Prepare design history files · Develop SOPs and direction of use packs Qualifications/Skills required: MSc in Biomedical Science Experience in device design, manufacture, sterilization and reporting Experience with whole tissue sampling and processing Experience in preparing samples for CT and MRI Image analysis tools experience including mimics Histological experience Essential Requirements: MSc in Biomedical Science Experience in device design, manufacture, sterilization and reporting Experience with whole tissue sampling and processing Experience in preparing samples for CT and MRI Image analysis tools experience including mimics Histological experience Desirable Requirements: Statistical analysis experience Employment permit restrictions apply for this category of post Salary: €22,110-€26,246 per annum (pro-rata – for part time or shorter contracts) Start date: Position is available from 8 July 2019. The position is available from 3rd August 2019 to 31st December 2019, to cover a period of maternity leave. This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland. Organisation: The Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) is a national, SFI funded, €49.6m research centre that brings together researchers from NUI Galway, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. The prime objective for CÚRAM is to radically improve health outcomes for patients by developing innovative implantable ‘smart’ medical devices to treat major unmet medical needs. Implants will be designed and manufactured to respond to the body’s environment and to deliver therapeutic agents, such as drugs, exactly where needed. Cutting-edge science will develop devices using the very latest research from biomaterials, stem cells and drug delivery and the support of strong clinical collaborations, industry partners and hospital groups to enable rapid translation to the clinic. Job Description: The role of the Scientific Research Associate – Public Engagement is to promote and disseminate scientific research outputs arising from the CÚRAM research programme and to identify opportunities and make funding applications for the continued development of the programme.
