The position is a full-time, specific purpose contract and is available from 19th July 2021 for an initial period of eight (8) months or to end of leave period of post holder. This position is within the Centre for Health Evaluation, Methodology Research & Evidence Synthesis (CHEMRES) at the National University of Ireland Galway. The research portfolio of the Centre for Health Evaluation, Methodology Research & Evidence Synthesis (CHEMRES) encompasses the Health Research Board – Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN), Evidence Synthesis Ireland and Cochrane Ireland. The research and infrastructural activities of these entities centre on advancing the foundations on which good healthcare decisions are made both nationally and internationally. This is achieved through both developing robust methodologies for randomised trials and also ensuring good quality evidence synthesis through capacity building and training. The centre has a dynamic team of Researchers, Academics, Administrators, postgraduate Students, Programme Managers and Director (Professor Declan Devane). The overall mission of the HRB-TMRN is to strengthen trials methodology and reporting in Ireland, through a programme of work. This is achieved through a focus on four high-level activities relating to the methodology of trials (i) support (ii) training and education (iii) research and innovation (iv) Public Involvement and Engagement. The HRB-TMRN was established in 2014, and since then has grown to become the main support Network for all trialists, communicating to over 4000 people with an interest in trials and trials methodology every month. The Network is dynamic, energetic and adaptive to the needs of the trial community. Job Description: The position as Research Fellow / Acting Network Programme Manager, is to ensure the continued functionality of the Network during the maternity leave period. The successful candidate will be responsible for co-ordinating, organising, managing and delivering activities for the Network nationally, as well as contributing to the strategic development of the Network. They will also be responsible for overseeing ongoing trials methodology research projects nationally and reporting and disseminating project findings. They will be based in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at NUI Galway but will also interface across the Network in partner sites in UCD, TCD, UL and UCC. This position is funded by Health Research Board and is available from 01.08.2021 to contract end date of 31.05.2022 Job Description: Project title: Improving long-term patient recovery and reducing disability after COVID-19 critical illness using microRNA-based approaches” (COV19-2020-060) This project is investigating microRNA-based biomarkers for muscle wasting during COVID-19, as well as potential microRNA-based interventions for muscle loss and premature frailty as a result of critical illness, such as COVID-19. This project is a collaboration between NUIG, UCC and GUH. The research assistant on this project will mainly drive the project through wet lab experiments using a range of cell and molecular biology techniques. The researcher will be placed in the group of Dr. Kasia Goljanek-Whysall and Dr. Brian McDonagh, which researcher interventions for muscle wasting in ageing and disease.
