MELS also aims to assist inventory compliers incorporate emission mitigation measures into the national emission inventory. The role will involve modelling gaseous emissions, report writing, organizing project meetings and workshops, and dissemination to stakeholders across the consortium. Background to the Role: Teagasc Johnstown Castle is the leading agricultural research centre in Ireland for soils and the environment. The centre conducts research on a wide range of subjects including the agricultural environment, soils, ecology, nutrient use efficiency, and air and water quality. The research programme is carried out by scientific and technical experts, supported by administrative and operative professionals. Johnstown Castle staff work with state of the art laboratory, greenhouse and growth chamber facilities to present reliable results to stakeholders. They also use the estate’s land resources to conduct small or large-scale field experiments. In total, the Johnstown Castle estate covers 400 hectares, of which 250 hectares is under farmland and the balance being forestry, parkland and lakes. The modern farms on the estate, a dairy farm and a beef farm, are devoted to measuring the sustainability of livestock production. The main mission of Teagasc is to support science based innovation in the agri-food sector and wider bio-economy that will underpin profitability, competitiveness and sustainability. Agricultural outputs have many environmental benefits, but similar to most goods, generate climate warming emissions, known as greenhouse gas (GHG).
