This post is for 1 year 32 hours - Portiuncula University Hospital 5 Hours - Roscommon University Hospital Brief Description of existing service/specialty The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) currently has 6 post holders. These post holders provide 24/7 cover to the PUH site. The person appointed will be required to participate in the Anaesthesiology 1:6 on-call rota at Portiuncula University Hospital. The PUH site provides elective surgical procedures (with an emphasis on day surgery) to multiple specialties. These include general surgery, gynaecology, urology, paediatric urology, maxillofacial surgery &paediatric dentistry. Two of the six Consultant Anaesthesiologists also provide day care theatre services at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH). One Consultant Anaesthesiologist is attached to UHG where he provides theatre and education services. PUH provides maternity services to the region of East Galway, Athlone, West Offaly and Roscommon. Approximately, 1,600 deliveries of infants per year take place in the maternity unit. The Anaesthesiology Department provides support in relation to analgesia (epidural), anaesthesia for caesarean sections and intensive care/inter-hospital transfer services for critically ill maternity patients. PUH is an integral part of the Women’s and Children’s Directorate Saolta group with several obstetric posts shared with UHG Maternity Unit. The Intensive Care Unit provides support for medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric patients. There are 5 ICU (ventilated) beds, 2 HDU beds and 1 coronary care bed. There are strong links with UHG intensive care as part of the National Critical Care Programme. Currently PUH provides chronic pain services on week days. St. Finbarr’s Hospital is the largest community hospital in the HSE South. The hospital has 88 beds consisting of continuing care beds for the elderly, a Community Nursing Unit. The Hospital is based on a wider campus site which has many community based services. The Hospital supports the undergraduate BSc nursing programme as a placement site as well as post graduate placements for the Higher Diploma in Gerontology. There is a strong link to UCC on joint research projects in gerontological care. Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: • Integrated, locally planned and delivered • Easier to access and navigate • Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level. The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region.
