The Brothers of Charity Services Ireland West Region offer services to people with an intellectual disability in Galway City and County, and Roscommon. We work to form genuine relationships and partnerships with each person we support and those closest to them. We aim to support people to participate in the everyday life of their community, to have ordinary life experiences, and to create opportunities for the people we support to form real friendships. The Role: To support adults in the West Sector, and on specific referrals, adults in the East Sector and Children Sector, with an intellectual disability who present with behaviours that challenge in order to assist them to cope with and change the conditions that influence and maintain their behaviour. This is so that they themselves and those who share their lives will have an improved quality of life and that the individual will be able to move further towards achieving their desired personal outcomes. This aim will be achieved through assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of specialised interventions and by adhering to the five core concepts of the CNS role, set out in the framework for the establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4thedition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008. The successful candidate will work as a key member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team providing, through collaboration and the nursing process, comprehensive integrated documented supports in respect of the individual, for the family, frontline staff and wider multi-disciplinary team, to achieve this aim. The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a peripatetic type service with other colleagues. This specialist practice will encompass a major clinical focus, comprising assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating supports agreed for those we support. While having significant office-based time, all observations and the implementation of interventions will be carried out where the person supported lives or works. This may involve some late evening and weekend work depending on service need.
