Hospital Chaplain
Background The Chaplaincy Department operates within the Office of Mission Effectiveness, with the Director of Mission having overall governance. The Office, having been established by Sr Marguerite Rock in 2002, has responsibility for promoting the integration of Mercy values into all aspects of hospital life. Job Purpose The Locum Chaplaincy role at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) is dedicated to providing comprehensive spiritual care and guidance to patients, relatives, carers, students, and staff. The post-holder will support people of all faiths and none through times of illness, crisis, transition, and bereavement, while contributing to a culture of dignity, respect, and inclusion in alignment with the hospital mission. They will report to the Head Chaplain and Director of Mission, and collaborate with the wider chaplaincy team to support patient care. Key Duties and Responsibilities Professional / Leadership: • Be a visible presence within the hospital, and provide compassionate spiritual and pastoral care to patients, families, and staff across all clinical areas. • Respond sensitively to crisis situations, end-of-life care, bereavement, and emergency referrals. • Work collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team to support holistic, person-centred care. • Promote an inclusive and respectful approach to people of all faith traditions and none. • Maintain own professional standards, engage in reflective practice, and avail of training/learning opportunities as agreed with the Head Chaplain. • Ensure the optimal Chaplaincy and Pastoral model of care is practiced in accordance with best evidence/research, service requirements, and feedback from patients, staff, and team colleagues. • Proactively identify and manage risk within the Chaplaincy/Pastoral Care service. Management: • Work under the direction of the Head Chaplain / Director of Mission and contribute to the effective delivery of Pastoral and Spiritual Care within the hospital. • Support the coordination of referrals and prioritisation of pastoral care needs within the hospital. • Maintain appropriate documentation, statistics, and reports in line with hospital policy and professional standards. • Contribute to a culture of professionalism, accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement within the Chaplaincy-Pastoral Care Team. • Support linkages with the CPE director/supervisor and collaboratively work to enhance the quality of the CPE student experience (theoretical and practice). • Offer support to volunteer chaplains / Eucharistic ministers whenever possible. • Participate in appraisals, setting and agreeing personal objectives, and ensure completion of all appropriate pastoral/spiritual training, including MMUH essential training. • Self-evaluate and monitor the quality of work undertaken, and seek feedback from line manager and colleagues to validate contributions. • Ensure hospital environs, including the chapel, places of worship, and mortuary facility, are maintained and are reflective of a faith-based and Mission-driven organisation. Communication: • Communicate with empathy, professionalism, and sensitivity with patients, families, carers, and staff, particularly in situations of distress, grief, or crisis. • Build and contribute to effective communication between members of the chaplaincy team, staff, local faith leaders, and all concerned with the spiritual care of patients/clients and their relatives and friends. • Work toward raising awareness, especially among staff, of the spiritual dimensions of care; advise on how individual spiritual care needs might be assessed; contribute to that assessment process and collaboratively plan on meeting same. • Ensure that patients/clients, significant others, and staff members are aware of the Pastoral Care Service and how to make contact. • Maintain clear, timely, and appropriate documentation and communication in accordance with hospital policy and confidentiality requirements. Training, Education and Self Development: • The Healthcare Chaplain will be committed to continued professional development through in-service training as provided by the Chaplaincy organisations and associations to which members of the department are affiliated. • Participate in mandatory training programmes and keep abreast of all relevant Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines, especially relating to safeguarding, health and safety, infection prevention and control, confidentiality, and GDPR. • Continuously develop knowledge by keeping up-to-date with developments in the Healthcare Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care field to facilitate contemporary professional practice. • The Chaplain will keep informed about current ethical issues in healthcare and shall be prepared to address ethical concerns with the Head Chaplain and Director of Mission. Core Competencies Pastoral Care: Demonstrated ability to provide compassionate and empathetic pastoral care to patients, families, and staff members, addressing their spiritual, emotional, and existential needs with sensitivity and respect. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex theological concepts, provide spiritual guidance, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, clergy, and community partners. Ethical Decision-Making: Sound ethical judgment and adherence to Catholic moral theology, with the ability to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, provide guidance on end-of-life issues, and uphold patient autonomy and dignity. Strategic Thinking: Capacity for strategic planning and visioning, with the ability to identify goals and objectives which contribute to the overall mission and strategic direction of the hospital. Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the Head Chaplain, Director of Mission, key stakeholders, interdisciplinary teams, and hospital administrators to integrate spiritual care into patient-centered care plans and promote a culture of holistic healing. Crisis Intervention: Proficiency in providing spiritual support and crisis intervention to individuals and families facing medical crises, grief, loss, or other challenging circumstances, offering comfort, hope, and guidance in times of need. Documentation and Administration: Attention to detail and proficiency in maintaining accurate records, documentation, and administrative tasks related to chaplaincy services, ensuring compliance with hospital regulations and confidentiality standards. Continuous Learning: Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning, staying informed about best practices in chaplaincy, healthcare ethics, and Catholic healthcare ministry, and integrating new knowledge and skills into practice to enhance the quality of spiritual care delivery. Qualifications • A Degree in Theology at a recognised institute. • Certification in Healthcare Chaplaincy from the Healthcare Chaplaincy Board (HCB) or equivalent. • Minimum 3 units of CPE. • Proficiency in the English language. Housing Solutions Support Worker
We are offering a six‑month fixed‑term opportunity to gain meaningful frontline experience with one of Northern Ireland’s leading homelessness charities. We are seeking a Housing Solutions Support Worker to support the delivery of essential, multi‑agency services for individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Working closely with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, you will use Housing Solutions approaches to provide practical, person‑centred support to individuals with complex needs. As a Housing Solutions Support Worker, you will play a key role in assisting clients at the point of referral, delivering tailored housing-related support to existing service users, and supporting individuals as they transition from Simon Community services into more independent living arrangements.
