Apprenticeship Program The Electrical Apprenticeship is a Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft Electrical award. It focuses on the development of a range of skills such health & safety, electrical science, electrical installations, wiring and panel control systems. Our Electrical Apprentices will be joining as part of our Maintenance Department to be based in both Plant 1 & Plant 2 in our Naas, Co. Kildare location. This is a 4 year programme made up of 7 phases, 4 onsite and 3 offsite college block locations. This programme will commence in September 2026. An Electrical Apprentice is a trainee technician supporting the maintenance team in performing corrective and preventative maintenance to a high standard. Over the course of a four-year program, our Electrical Apprentices will prepare and upskill to become a multi-skilled maintenance technician. The complexity of tasks increases as skills levels and competence develop within the program. Role Responsibilities & Duties
Maintenance Craftsman/Technician
Remuneration The salary scale for the post is: (01/08/2025) €41,565 €42,722 €45,557 €45,842 €46,127 €46,411 €46,697 €46,982 €47,268 €47,553 €47,869 New appointees to any grade start at the minimum point of the scale. Incremental credit will be applied for recognised relevant service in Ireland and abroad (Department of Health Circular 2/2011). Incremental credit is normally granted on appointment, in respect of previous experience in the Civil Service, Local Authorities, Health Service and other Public Service Bodies and Statutory Agencies. Purpose of the post The person appointed will carry out building and carpentry maintenance and repair works as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising of engineers, Craftworkers, general operatives and supporting contractors. To deliver a prompt, efficient cost-effective customer focused service in a team environment. Principal duties and responsibilities Professional The Maintenance Craftsman/Technician (Carpenter) will: · Assist in maintaining all HSE buildings (interior and exterior) in an outstanding condition of readiness by accomplishing timely carpentry maintenance as well as major improvements and renovations. · Be able to operate all types of woodworking equipment to include all hand and bench tools · Be accountable for all tools, and ensure stock of equipment is kept in proper state of repair in accordance with safety standards · Comply with Health and Safety legislation when performing assigned responsibilities · Be required to work mainly on their own and will be required to complete tasks associated with completing the requisitions, which may include drilling, chasing, coring, lifting floor covering, cleaning etc. · Be required to assist all other trades in the completion of small refurbishment projects and new installations · Attend to the maintenance and routine repairs of existing fitted furniture, renovations, locks, doors, PVC windows and doors, glass replacements, roofs, valleys, barges, ridge tiles, floor tiles, shower tiles, facia and soffit, gutters, and down pipes · Assist in the drawing up of planned maintenance programme in consultation with the Maintenance Foreman as required. · Carry out the installation and fabrication of fitted presses, cupboards and shelving. · Carry out first and second fixing for minor building work · Carry out fault-finding and repairs i.e., roof leaks · Carry out planned preventative maintenance programmes, equipment checks, inspections and plant operational and performance log readings as set out by the Maintenance Manager/Maintenance Foreman. · Assist where required, other trades with maintenance duties not related to carpentry, such duties will be assigned by the maintenance foremen and manager. · Be involved in concrete shuttering · Be required to carry out fire door checks and resolve any deflects in line with HSE fire door policy · Operate and carry out planned preventative maintenance programmes as set out by the Maintenance Manager or Foreman. Carry a mobile phone, pager or other aids of communication as required · Operate and work with new technology and provide and maintain such written and computer records, as required from time to time. · Report to the Maintenance Foreman/Maintenance Officer and carry out such duties as are delegated by them for the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds identified. · Work the days and hours specified by the Maintenance Manager/Maintenance Foreman or nominated officer. This may include evenings and weekends and will be subject to review. Some overtime will be required to be performed periodically. · Record all maintenance activities in a professional manner · Participate in the management of new developments projects, as and when required · Be required to work in adverse conditions in emergency situations as directed (Emergency roof repairs) · Liaise and work with outside contractors, as and when required · Perform maintenance of the building fabric and the hospital grounds, where required · Be required to work in satellite sites from time to time · Be required to take part in any On Call agreement in practice · Be required to assist and train apprentices in their duties · In line with core principles of an integrated workforce, the person employed will carry out any cross-trade duties when required Team Work The Maintenance Craftsman/Technician (Carpenter) will: · Have the competence to work on one’s own initiative and unsupervised, the person employed must have the ability to work effectively within the maintenance team in a proactive approach and manner. Apprenticeship Overview This is an entry-level Electrical Apprenticeship and Trainee ATEX Inspector role. Successful candidates will be enrolled in an apprenticeship programme designed to develop the skills, experience and competencies required to become a qualified electrician and ATEX Inspector. During the apprenticeship, you will receive a combination of: • Classroom-based education • Paid on-the-job training • Structured mentoring from experienced inspectors and engineers • Practical exposure to real industrial environments Apprentices will receive training in the: • Installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of wiring systems for industrial applications • Inspection of electrical equipment in non-hazardous areas • Inspection and verification of equipment and installations in potentially explosive atmospheres • Development of technical inspection competence, reporting skills and industry knowledge This role offers exposure to specialist industrial work that few entry-level opportunities can provide. Location and Flexibility The apprenticeship is primarily based in the Dublin and Cork areas, with work carried out throughout Ireland and, at times, further afield. Candidates must be flexible with working hours when required. The Maintenance Department of St Josephs also covers daily maintenance of outlying Health Centres and HSE Residential House which include intellectual Disabilities, Mental Health Residential and Child Residential units, which are located throughout the County of Longford. St Lomans is located on the Delvin Road Mullingar. This facility consists of 44 bed care unit and day care services.
