Details of the Service Cork University Hospital (CUH) is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in the Country with in excess of 40 different medical and surgical specialties on the Campus. The hospital primarily treats patients from Cork and Kerry which have a combined population of more than 620,000. In addition to this, it is also a tertiary referral centre for Munster, serving a population of more than 1,173,000. CUH is designated as the Regional Specialist Centre for Cardiac Services with a broad range of skills and expertise resulting in high volumes of activity and access to appropriate diagnostic and treatment facilities. Best international standards provide evidence that better clinical outcomes are achieved when patients are treated by a multi-disciplinary specialist team. Health Regions Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: • Integrated, locally planned and delivered • Easier to access and navigate • Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level. The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region. This includes: • South / South West Hospital Group S/SWHG • Cork Kerry Community Healthcare CKCH • Midlands Louth Meath Community Health Organisation • Community Healthcare Organisation Dublin North City and County The Department of Population and Public Health is also now aligned with this health region Services in the South West health region: HSE Services working within this region include: • Acute Hospitals • Primary care services • Community services • Social care services • Health and social care professionals • Voluntary sector services South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare became part of HSE South West health region from 3rd March 2025 and the transition to the new structures will continue to take place throughout 2026. Purpose of the Post The Senior Cardiac Physiologist has a key role to play in the management and support of a high-quality Cardiac Diagnostic Service. They are responsible for managing their own caseload and for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of cardiac diagnostic services for service users according to service standards and best practice.This busy Cardiac Department carries out a comprehensive range of invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures, including a paediatric service (ECG, echocardiogram, Holters and Exercise Stress test). The Cardiac Physiologist, Senior should be familiar with the techniques and range of equipment used in current medical practice for the diagnosis, treatment and care of cardiac patients. The major portion of the work commitment of the Cardiac Physiologist, Senior is with the Cardiology Department and in addition the holder of this post will be required to carry out and participate in a wide range of medical procedures. A complete understanding of all such procedures and ability to make accurate measurements is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to perform many or all of these duties when requested by the Department head and to demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge and competence. Speech And Language Therapist, Senior, University Hospital
Cork University Hospital is the largest statutory / HSE hospital in Ireland and the only Model 4 (Specialist Academic Teaching) Hospital in the state with all acute surgical and medical specialties integrated on the same campus (Adults, Paediatrics, Maternity and Mental Health). It is a regional centre for secondary and tertiary care for the catchment area of HSE South, and also provides a number of supra-regional services in a range of specialities to the entire southern one third of Ireland, spanning 3 other RHA areas, and treating patients from the counties of Limerick, Clare, Kerry, Tipperary, Wexford, Carlow, Laois, Waterford and Kilkenny. At a national level the Emergency Department at CUH operates one of the busiest, highest-volume frontline services in the country, managing over 75,000 annual presentations. It is a one of two designated Major Trauma Centres in the country, one of two 24/7 neurosurgical and stroke thrombectomy centres, one of five 24/7 PPCI centres, one of four cardiothoracic surgical centres, one of two comprehensive coagulation & haemophilia centres, a cystic fibrosis centre, Tertiary Paediatric Centre and one of eight (NCCP) Cancer Centres. CUH provides Level 3s Critical Care with regional services to include neurosurgery, cardiothoracics etc. The Speech & Language Therapy Department provides care across Cork University Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital, St. Finbarr’s Rehabilitation Unit & Mallow General Hospital. The SLT Department is a dynamic work environment with service delivery provided across a wide range of specialties including General Medicine, Radiation/Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, Paediatrics, Neonatology etc. It is also a clinical practice site for undergraduates from UCC. Strong interagency working across community, hospitals and agency services takes place with a focus on the ongoing development of integrated care pathways across CHI & other acute hospitals, disability services, educational and community settings. The SLT service is committed to active service user involvement and continues to develop joint initiatives involving service users and key stakeholders in line with HSE policies.
Practice Tutor, Radiation Therapist, Clinical Specialist, University Hospital

CUH is the tertiary referral centre for the HSE Southern area, and the supra-regional area of Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. A new state of the art Radiation Oncology facility is now open and houses cutting edge technology including 5 Elekta Versa HD Linear Accelerators capable of SABR/SRS along with Surface-guided radiotherapy on all Linac’s. WGH Staff Nurse Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Department consists of a 5 bedded unit with individual isolated negative pressure rooms. There are plans for the development of an additional 5 beds for high dependency patients. The unit caters for both Surgical and Medical patients, including postoperative patients, cardiac patients, neurology patients and patients requiring urgent continuous dialysis therapy. ICU also manages obstetric emergencies and paediatrics when required. We also care for and manage our critical patients who require transfer to a speciality hospital for further intervention ensuring their safe transfer to the correct facility in a timely manner. The Intensive Care Unit is run by a highly specialised and experienced multidisciplinary team. The ICU promotes education and continuous learning for staff within the unit and at other educational centres, currently providing placement facility for staff enrolling on the Critical Care Foundation Course in affiliation with UCD and SETU Staff nurse Intensive Care Unit will report operationally to the CMN1/CNM2 Shift leader/CNMIII and and will be professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing.
