Portiuncula University Hospital comprises of 194 beds which includes a brand new 50 bed ward block. Portiuncula University Hospital provides 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with a 24/7 Emergency Department which had 30,283 attendances in 2023. The hospital serves the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly and has a natural referral pathway to the Midlands. Ballinasloe is the largest town in County Galway. The town has excellent junior and secondary schools and is close to the University of Galway and the Technology University of Shannon in Athlone. The town is served by public transport to the major centres. The area offers an abundance of sports, leisure and entertainment facilities. The town offers easy access to major regional centres of Galway City. Education & Training: Portiuncula University Hospital is a recognised site for training of undergraduate medical students from University of Galway and graduate entry medical students from University of Limerick. We are an accredited site for intern training for the West North West Intern Training program. We offer Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine to Senior House Officers on the RCPI training program and also an approved site with the ICGP West training scheme for GP training. We have international trainees on the CPSP program through RCPI and we also have Basic and Higher Specialist trainees in Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. There is formal structured weekly teaching for all medical staff in general internal medicine topics, MRCP teaching and exam preparation, advanced clinical skills training and inter professional simulation based education in the care of the deteriorating patient on a monthly basis. The post encompasses strategic, operational & resource management. The Surgical Access Manager, under the direction of the Peri-Operative Directorate will be tasked with managing the access and planning to maximise theatre utilisation, with the following main aims; 1. Manage the scheduling and cancellation of elective surgical patients on the UHL site. 2. To optimise elective surgery, streamline scheduling, and minimise unnecessary steps in the surgical care process. 3. To make the best use of available capacity and theatre scheduling across the hospital group. 2 4. Collaborate with stakeholders including surgeons, nursing, administrators, Bed Management and surgical departments to streamline the surgical scheduling process. 5. Contribute to the strategic management of surgical service, developing and implementing plans to improve access and efficiency.
