Details of the Service Cork University Hospital (CUH) is the largest acute hospital in the country. The hospital is a primary teaching hospital with close alliances to University College Cork (UCC), nursing, medical and allied health professional training. The hospital also plays a central role in the management of co-located services on-site. CUH is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in the country – an accreditation given with the presence of 40 different medical and surgical specialities delivered by the hospital – including Neurosciences, Cardiac Services, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Renal, Internal Medicine, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Maxillary-Facial, Paediatrics, Critical Care, Cancer Services, and Emergency Medicine. CUH is the tertiary referral Centre for the HSE Southern area, and the supra-regional area of Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. CUH therefore acts as a regional Centre for secondary and tertiary care for the catchment population of 550,000 served by the HSE Southern area and a supra-regional Centre for a total population of 1.1 million. CUH now has 800 beds following completion of the transfer of Cardiac and Renal services to the recently constructed Cardiac Renal Centre. The hospital currently employs 3,400 staff of multiple professions and is the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science in UCC. CUH provides the only consultant lead clinical neurophysiology service outside of Dublin. Our neurophysiology service is unique in that we provide all aspects- NCS/EMG (adult and Paediatric), EEG (adult, Paediatric, neonatal, ICU, telemetry, sleep-deprived and routine), evoked potentials, small fibre testing and intraoperative neuromonitoring and autonomic testing. There is a clinical need for someone to optimise management of scheduling of the IOM service to ensure we continue to develop this service internally and mitigate the on-going need to outsource at a premium cost to the hospital. The Chief 1 Neurophysiology will lead the intraoperative monitoring service, providing expert-level clinical support during surgical procedures and overseeing the operational and professional standards of the neurophysiology team. This role combines advanced clinical practice with strategic leadership and staff development. We currently provide a service to almost every medical and surgical team in the hospital. Highest demand comes through the following services: - Neurology - Neurosurgery - Orthopaedics - Paediatrics - ICU/critical care - Emergency department and MAU - Rheumatology - Medicine for the elderly - Vascular surgery Purpose of the Post The Senior Neurophysiologist has a key role to play in the management and support of a high-quality Neurophysiology Diagnostic Service. The post holder will perform routine and non-routine work carried out in the Clinical Neurophysiology Department. This post provides the opportunity to gain experience of more complex / non routine work in a supervised environment. The successful candidate must be familiar with the techniques and range of equipment used in current medical practice for the diagnosis, treatment and care of Neurophysiology patients and be fully competent in performing and reporting all such investigations. The post holder will have supervisorial responsibilities for their area and be actively involved in the service development. Existing Theatre, Endoscopy and Outpatient facilities will be equally shared amongst all Surgeons. Junior Hospital Doctor arrangements will work with Consultant teams. 225 Beds Wexford General Hospital with additional approx. 50 Surge Beds. 5 ICU 5 CCU/HDU 3 Operating theatres Two Endoscopy Units The consultant will participate in regular scheduled clinical, audit and other meetings with colleagues from all other specialties in the hospital in line with CME guidelines and PCS activities. Departmental activity/performance will be considered at department and hospital governance level. The appointee will liaise with colleagues on an ongoing basis regarding performance against targets and take appropriate action as required in this regard. The post will function within the governance structure of Wexford General Hospital and CHO5 as part of the Peri-Operative Directorate and through the clinical directorate reports to the executive team with established targets and KPI’s.
