Mallow General Hospital is a Model 2 within the South West Region. Mallow General Hospital is a 95 bed Acute General Hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and day patient services. The hospital has ongoing planned outpatient infrastructure development for 2026. The services provided in the hospital include – general medicine, cardiology, respiratory, gerontology and gastro-enterology, In patient medical activity is supported by a Medical Assessment Unit and a High Dependency Unit. Mallow General Hospital also provides elective day surgery/procedures to include general, vascular ent , urology, and Endoscopy, There is an Injuries Unit, and an Outpatient department, Physiotherapy, and Radiology including CT scanning services and ultra sound scan. Specialist and Advanced Practice Nursing includes Cardiology, Respiratory, Sleep, Haemovigilance, Infection Control ,Older Adult, Tissue Viability , Obesity, Dementia and Injury Mallow General Hospital Injury Unit (IU) was established during reconfiguration of hospital services following publication of the Smaller Hospitals Framework (HSE 2013a). The IU Mallow General Hospital is one of 3 Injury Units within the Emergency Care Network (ECN) of Cork University Hospitals Group. The IU is open 8am-8pm 7 days a week. The RANP (Injury Unit) scope of clinical practice involves the management of non-life and non-limb threatening conditions, commonly known as minor injuries or ambulatory care (HSE 2012; 2013b). The RANP scope of practice directly mirrors that of the Injury Unit scope agreed at national level under the National Emergency Medicine Programme (HSE 2012). The following is an example not an exhaustive list of clinical presentations included in the scope of practice for this role. Suspected broken bones and/or dislocations to legs from knees to toes Suspected broken bones and/or dislocations to arms from collar bone (clavicle) to finger tips All sprains or strains Facial injuries/problems - minor (including oral, dental and nasal injuries) Scalds and burns - minor Wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations Splinters and fish hooks Foreign bodies in eyes/ears/nose Head injury – minor (fully conscious children, who did not experience loss of consciousness or vomit after the head injury) Suturing Purpose of the post The advanced practice service is provided by nurses who practice at a higher level of capability as independent, autonomous and expert advanced practitioners. The overall purpose of the service is to provide safe, timely, evidenced based nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level. This involves undertaking and documenting complete episodes of patient care, which includes comprehensively assessing, diagnosing, planning, treating and discharging patients in accordance with collaboratively agreed local policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and/or service level agreements/ memoranda of understanding. The RANP (Injury Unit) demonstrates advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, clinical leadership, and complex decision-making abilities. The RANP (Injury Unit) practices in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (NMBI 2014), the Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework (NMBI 2015), Advanced Practice (Nursing) Standards and Requirements (NMBI 2017), and the Values for Nurses and Midwives in Ireland (Department of Health 2016). The RANP (Injury Unit) service provides clinical leadership and professional scholarship in the delivery of optimal nursing services and informs the development of evidence-based health policy at local, regional and national levels. Details of Service The newly established HSE South West Region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services for Cork, Kerry serving a population of over 740,614 people, with a supra-regional catchment of 1.2 million. The redesign of services will allow new pathways to be developed between acute hospitals, community services, primary care, health & wellbeing and voluntary sectors to develop more integrated, patient-centred care. The HSE South West principle academic partner is University College Cork (UCC), which offers a wide range of educational programmes. Research is conducted widely within our regional hospitals. HSE South West includes seven acute hospitals as follows: The HSE South West Region was formally established on 3rd March 2025, replacing the previous South-South West Hospital Group and Cork-Kerry Community Healthcare structures. This Region is responsible for the delivery of acute and community healthcare across Cork and Kerry. The region's priorities include; · Improving access to services · Maintaining quality and safety · Reducing waiting times for acute and community services · Supporting public health and well-being. The role of the regional CNM3 is a pivotal role in supporting the HSE South West acute hospitals in implementing the recommendations and objectives of the National Surgical Site Surveillance Programme (AMRIC). Key actions identified in the Ireland’s Third One Health National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (iNAP3) 2026-2030 and the HSE Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control (AMRIC) Action Plan 2026-2030 is to develop and expand the SSI Surveillance Programme. In 2023, the European Point Prevalence Survey of Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) in Irish hospitals identified that the rate of Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) was 7.4% and that the third most prevalent HAI was SSI, at 13.6% (Health Protection Surveillance Centre, 2024). The role will entail the management of other projects as assigned by the RDONM or DON. One of these projects is to assist with site implementation of the TrendCare system across acute hospitals in the HSE South West Region. TrendCare is being introduced on a phased basis across Model 4,3 and 2 hospitals to support the Framework for Safe Staffing and Skill Mix. TrendCare is a workforce planning management system, which identifies the nursing hours required per patient day by acuity, skill mix, nurse-to-patient ratios and patient allocation. Purpose of the Post The CNM3 will play a key role in providing clinical and professional leadership and promoting the values of the organisation, Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control (AMRIC) and HIQA standards. The CNM3 will work with the DON, Safe and Effective Care, to continue the management of the SSIS programme and other projects in the HSE South West. In fulfilling the role, the CNM3 will work closely with multidisciplinary teams in the hospitals of the HSE South West and will be responsible for supporting on-going and future projects assigned. The appointed person will: · Continue the roll out the Surgical Site Surveillance Programme across the HSE South West using the applied methodology. The SSIS programme contributes to safe patient care through the prevention, surveillance, investigation, liaison, education, research and SSIS programme management. · Lead the education and audit of the SSIS programme in the HSE South West. · Continue the development and implementation of related Policy, Procedures and Guidelines (PPGs). · Work closely with the multi-disciplinary team/s, evaluating the outcomes of SSIS and engaging in quality improvement initiatives. · Implement the HSE AMRIC Action Plan 2026-2030, pertaining to SSIS. · Support the roll out of future projects as deemed appropriate such as the Framework for Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill Mix including TrendCare · Contribute to the overall development and progression of projects in terms of the project plan, timeframes, objectives, outcomes and key milestones. Details of the Service Cork University Hospital is the largest single multi-speciality hospital in Ireland. It is the only Level 1 Trauma Hospital in Ireland. Regional specialities include neurosurgery, plastics and burns, cystic fibrosis and cardiac surgery. It is the centre in Cork City and county for trauma orthopaedics. CUH is the largest multi-specialty site in the country. CUH physiotherapy department has a staff of over 90 WTE providing services across inpatients, outpatients & outreach. The Physiotherapy Department provides physiotherapy care within Cork University Hospital, St. Finbarr’s Hospital Rehabilitation Unit, Westfield Integrated Care –ICPOP and Cork University Maternity Hospital. Physiotherapy plays an integral role in the multidisciplinary team. The service also provides weekend and on-call services (respiratory and mobility) under specific criteria. The post holder will be required to participate in this. Flexibility will be required with regard to the working week as the post holder may be required to give classes/cover clinics in the evening and at weekends. Purpose of the Post There is currently a vacancy for 1 WTE Clinical Specialist in Neurosciences within the Physiotherapy Department in CUH. The post holder will work across the neurosciences and neurology teams in CUH. The post holder will, together with the other clinical specialists in the service, act as a strategic and clinical lead for these services.
