Profile of Craft Core Skills Carpentry & Joinery Construction The Trade of Carpentry & Joinery is very wide and varied, it encompasses most of the skills required by the Wood Trades. These skills required of the Carpenter & Joiner are not confined to those required to work in wood but include skills in the use of metals, plastics and fabrics. The Carpenter & Joiner is also required to work in a cross section of domains within the overall trade. The structure of the apprenticeship programme ensures that the training and education delivered to apprentices are grounded in the needs of the workplace. The culture of apprenticeship learning and development prepares apprentices to be adaptable, flexible, self-motivated and manage change. The programme also prepares the apprentice to meet the challenge of future developments in their craft and the workplace by equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge and competence required. The alternating phases of training generally consist of three off-the-job phases and four on-the-job phases and the duration of the apprenticeship is determined by the training, education and development requirements of each occupation. On successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, apprentices are qualified to work within the recognised trade or profession. Where apprentices and craftspersons have the necessary ability and initiative, opportunities are available for further advancement including advanced technology courses and management courses which will assist them to launch careers as engineers, managers of their own business, teachers and instructors. Full details of the SOLAS Electrical Apprenticeship are available at www.apprenticeship.ie DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The Apprentice Electrician will be responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains excellent time-keeping and attendance through both the On-the Job and Off-the-Job phases of the apprenticeship. They will be required to make themselves available to travel to and attend Off-the Job phases when provided with notice to do so and must progress through all phases in a timely fashion to maintain their employment as Apprentice Electrician. The Apprentice Electrician must be committed to the following general duties:- • learning and developing new craft-related skills, knowledge and competencies • working with and learning form the experienced Electrician who will be assigned as their designated Assessor • complying with all Health & Safety requirements associated with the role • working with mechanical equipment in a safe and knowledgeable manner • accepting responsibility for the quality of work assigned • being active and understanding that work associated with the role must be carried out in all weather conditions • general housekeeping duties associated wit the work of the Electrical Services section including routine maintenance, cleaning duties, parts inventory, etc. • using all tools, materials and other equipment provided and maintaining same in an excellent state of repair at all times • reading and interpreting technical instructions, manuals, etc. • maintaining accurate work records • communicating with the Electrician and other Supervisors • taking responsibility for their own learning, including allocating sufficient study and preparation time to allow them progress through phases • undertaking and successfully completing all phase exams to completion of the apprenticeship APPOINTMENTS: A panel may be formed on the basis of interviews, from which any offers of employment may be made. WAGES: During On-the-job phases the Apprentice will be paid by Kerry County Council and the rate payable for Year 1 of the apprenticeship is €271.39 (gross) per week. Increases to the rate of pay over the course of the apprenticeship will be in accordance with nationally prescribed rates and subject to satisfactory progression through the phases of the apprenticeship as well as attendance and overall performance. During Off-the job phases a training allowance is paid by the local Education and Training Board (ETB) while the Apprentice is attending the off-the-job training. A contribution towards travel or accommodation costs may be paid. ANNUAL LEAVE: 20 days per annum HOURS OF WORK: During On-the-Job phases the Apprentice will work 39 hours per week as set out below:- 8.15 am – 4.45 pm (Mon. – Thurs.) 8.15 am – 3.45 pm (Fri.) THE PERSON CHARACTER: Each candidate must be of good character. AGE: The minimum age at which the employment of an Apprentice may commence is 16 years of age HEALTH: Each candidate must be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination carried out by the Council’s nominated Occupational Health Doctor. Appointees to the Electrician Apprenticeship must pass the Ishiara colour vision test EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE, ETC.: Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms: (a) have achieved Grade D in five subjects in the Department of Education & Skills Junior Certificate Examination or an approved equivalent or (b) have successfully completed an approved Pre-Apprenticeship course or (c) have three years’ work experience gained after sixteen years of age in a relevant designated industrial activity as SOLAS shall deem acceptable It should be noted that these are the current approved minimum educational requirements for apprenticeship programmes, however previous experience of the following subjects would be an advantage: Mathematics, Technology, Technical Drawing/Graphics, Physics, Construction Studies. CITIZENSHIP: Candidates must, by the date of any job offer, be: a) a citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA), or The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway b) a citizen of the United Kingdom (UK), or c) a citizen of Switzerland pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons, or d) a non-EEA citizen who is a spouse or child of an EEA or UK or Swiss citizen and has a stamp 4 visa, or e) a person awarded international protection under the International Protection Act 2015 or any family member entitled to remain in the State as a result of family reunification and has a stamp 4 visa, or f) a non-EEA citizen who is a parent of a dependent child who is a citizen of, and resident in, an EEA member state or the UK or Switzerland and has a stamp 4 visa FORMAT OF THE COMPETITION The selection process may include some or all of the following:- • Initial Screening • Assessment • Shortlisting based on information contained in their application form • Preliminary Interview • Final Interview Step 1: Initial Screening In the first instance, all applications received by the latest date/time for receipt of completed applications will be screened for eligibilty in accordance with the qualifications for the post as set out in this booklet. Step 2: Assessment/Testing and/or Shortlisting If the volume of applicants for the position is such that it would not be practical to interview all qualified candidates, Kerry County Council may decide to carry out assessment or conduct a shortlisting exercise based on an examination of application forms having regard to the requirements for the position and the candidates demonstration of their suitability for the role. It is therefore in candidate’s own best interest to provide a detailed and accurate account in response to the questions posed in the application form. Step 3: Preliminary Interview If, following Step 2, there remains a significant number of candidates, it may be necessary to hold preliminary interviews. Step 4: Final Interview Candidates who are successful in the shortlisting/preliminary interview process will be invited to attend for final interview. Kerry County Council will endeavour to give sufficient notice of the any scheduled interview time and date to candidates. Thereafter, it is the responsibility of the candidate to make themselves available on time and on the date advised. Candidates who do not attend for interview on the date and time advised will be deemed to have withdrawn their application from the competition. Expenses incurred by candidates in attending for interview, will be at the candidates own expense. GENERAL INFORMATION Kerry County Council will not be responsible for any expense, including travelling expenses, which candidates may incur in connection with their candidature. Candidates will be asked for details of any special requirements which they may have in attending for interview. Candidates invited to attend for interview may be asked, at any stage of the recruitment process, to supply further documentation in relation to their academic qualifications, employment history, etc. Any offer of employment will be subject to verification of information provided on the application form, pre-employment medical examination, reference checks, and Garda vetting if appropriate. An applicant who is found to be ineligible at any stage of the competition will not be further considered. Provision of inaccurate, untrue, or misleading information will result in disqualification from the competition, withdrawal of employment offered, or dismissal.
