Details of Service

Mid West Mental Health Service: 

Mid West Mental Health Services delivers a comprehensive multi-disciplinary mental health service in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. Services are provided in both the community and in residential units. 

Older Persons Residential Service: 

Older Persons Residential Services works with multi-disciplinary teams, delivering a coordinated approach to client care in residential units over Limerick, Clare and Tipperary. 

They are divided into nine units as follows: 

  • Regina House, Kilrush, Co. Clare

  • Raheen Community Nursing Unit, Tuamgreaney, Co. Clare 

  • St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ennis, Co. Clare 

  • St. Camillus Hospital, Limerick. 

  • St. Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. 

  • Community Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles, Co. Tipperary 

  • Dean Maxwell Community Nursing Unit, Roscrea, Co Tipperary 

  • St. Conlon’s Community Nursing Unit, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary

Purpose of the Post

The Catering/Household Attendant will carry out all duties as assigned to him/her. He/she will at all time act in such a manner to ensure high quality resident-centred care. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Principal Duties of the post are:-

  • To be courteous at all times to patients, relatives, staff members and all visitors to your area of work 

  • To regard all information regarding patient, residents/clients and staff as strictly confidential 

  • Report all incidents and accidents involving self, patients or visitors to Domestic Supervisor/Nurse in Charge 

  • To be punctual for duty at all times. 

  • Attendant uniform must be worn on duty and will be supplied by the service 

  • To maintain a good standard of personal hygiene and appearance and to ensure that the correct uniform is worn at all times 

  • To adhere to Unit/Residence cleaning schedule and maintain a clean and tidy work environment 

  • To adhere to the protocol on disposal of clinical and non-clinical waste 

  • Comply with HACCP Regulations when handling food 

  • Be familiar with the Unit Fire Regulations 

  • Be familiar with Health and Safety Regulations and ensure safety of Clients/staff and others when on duty 

  • You may be required to attend and participate in

  • Inanimate Handling & Lifting Training 

  • Fire lectures and drill 

  • HACCP 

  • Infection Control 

  • Prevention & Management of Aggression and Violence 

  • Cleanpass

  • Children’s First

  • Other in-service training or educational lectures

  • Maintenance of canteen and kitchen areas as required 

  • Prepare dining rooms for mealtimes 

  • Prepare and serve food/drinks during catering hours and collect crockery etc. where necessary 

  • Preparation, serving and clearing away after meals as required 

  • Clean and tidy all areas to which assigned 

  • Clean kitchen appliances on a regular basis 

  • Move beds and furniture in locations as required 

  • Attend to spillage immediately to reduce the risk of accidents 

  • Ensure the sluice room, bathrooms, toilets and other ancillary rooms are clean and tidy 

  • Answer telephones and locate appropriate personnel where necessary 

  • Report all broken items in need of repair to Domestic Supervisor/Nurse in Charge 

  • Involvement in the operation of new technology/cleaning equipment 

  • Carry out duties as assigned from time to time, which would facilitate the smoother running of the department 

  • Employees are not permitted to leave the precincts of the unit during the hours of duty without the expressed permission of the Line Manager 

  • To support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service 

  • Any other duties appropriate to role of Catering/ Household Attendant as may be requested from time to time by Domestic Supervisor / Line Manager or Nurse in Charge 

  • Have a working knowledge of the Mental Health Commission (MHC) Regulations/Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards as appropriate to the role

Eligibility Criteria 

Qualifications and/ or experience,

Candidates must have on the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office: 

  • Good Standard of Education

  • Ability to discharge the duties of the post satisfactorily 

Health: 

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character: 

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character. 

Age: 

Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.

Terms & Conditions of Employment 

Tenure

Tenure will be confirmed on appointment. This post is pensionable.

Appointment as an employee of the Health Service Executive is governed by the Health Act 2004 and the Public Service Management (Recruitment and Appointment) Act 2004. 

Remuneration 

The current remuneration for the office is as follows as per Consolidated Payscale 01.01.2020: 

 €27,394 €29,072 €30,321 €30,842 €31,063 €31,583 €32,115 €32,534 €33,038 

Working Week 

The standard working week applying to the post is: 39 hours

HSE Circular 003-2009 “Matching Working Patterns to Service Needs (Extended Working Day / Week Arrangements); Framework for Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016” applies. Under the terms of this circular, all new entrants and staff appointed to promotional posts from Dec 16th 2008 will be required to work agreed roster / on call arrangements as advised by their line manager. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8am-8pm over seven days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement (Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016). 

Annual Leave 

The annual leave associated with the post is: 23 days

Superannuation 

This is a pensionable position with the HSE. 

 The successful candidate will upon appointment become a member of the appropriate pension scheme. Pension scheme membership will be notified within the contract of employment. Members of pre-existing pension schemes who transferred to the HSE on the 01st January 2005 pursuant to Section 60 of the Health Act 2004 are entitled to superannuation benefit terms under the HSE Scheme which are no less favourable to those which they were entitled to at 31st December 2004
