Could you Foster a Child?

Becoming a Foster Carer

Foster carers offer a safe and stable family home for children and young people who are unable to live with their own families and are in the care of the State. There are all sorts of reasons why children come into foster care and Agencies work with foster carers to place children and to support them for as long as they need it.

Agencies across Ireland work in partnership with Tusla to offer fostering placements to children and young people in care. Becoming a foster carer is a big decision and there are a number of things you need to know before deciding whether it is right for you and your family. There are also some essential requirements that must be in place before you start the fostering journey.

You will need to also consider your own family as they will have an important part to play in the success of a fostering placement. Support is provided by the fostering services and allowances will also be paid to foster carers, this ranges between €325 - €352 per week per child. The allowance you receive when fostering in Ireland with us is exempt from taxation under the Finance Bill 2005. This also means that the money you receive is not usually classed as income when applying for certain benefits.

The fostering allowance takes into account the costs of living with a foster child. This includes, food, clothing, basic travel, household bills, education costs, everyday living, holidays and summer camps and special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas.

Fostering is an amazing journey that can turn a child's life around - find out more about fostering with Tusla or with one of the agencies such as the ones below.
