Background Age & Opportunity is the national organisation that provides a range of opportunities for older people who want to get more involved in arts and culture, sport and physical activity, civic engagement and personal development. Our mission is to enable the best quality of life for us all as we age. Our vision is of an Ireland where all older people can be more active, more visible, more creative, more connected, more confident, more often. We have an opportunity for a candidate who is highly motivated, with a strong project management background to join our Active Programme team as PALs Coordinator. Our Active programme is the national sport and physical activity programme for older people funded by Sport Ireland and the HSE. The programme is designed to get older people in Ireland more active. Our PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) initiative is an education and peer leadership initiative which trains older people how to lead sport and physical activity sessions in their local groups and communities. We have a network of trained PALs around the country. Our Physical Activity Leaders initiative also encompasses our CarePALs and PPALs initiatives. Our CarePALs initiative trains those working or volunteering in nursing homes and day care settings to lead suitable physical activities with people in their care. Our PPALs initiative trains older adults with intellectual disability to take a leadership role promoting physical activity among their peers. Over the past two years we have carried out two major research studies of the impact of the pandemic on older people’s groups involved in physical activity programmes. The research shows that these groups and their associated Physical Activity Leaders (PALs) were severely impacted by the debilitating effects of the pandemic. However, it also shows that hundreds of PALs (within community and residential care settings) across the country, have returned to leading physical activity in their groups. Supporting these PALs, revitalising their groups and the strengthening and expansion of our PALs network are key strategic priorities for us over the next three years. The appointment of a PALs Coordinator is a key part of this strategy. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to contribute to the national programme of physical activity for older people.
