Orderly Security / Multi-task Attendant
Remuneration The salary scale for the post at 01/06/2026: €36,651 €38,130 €39,687 €40,101 €41,118 €41,998 €43,264 €44,577 €45,939 New appointees to any grade start at the minimum point of the scale. Incremental credit will be applied for recognised relevant service in Ireland and abroad (Department of Health Circular 2/2011). Incremental credit is normally granted on appointment, in respect of previous experience in the Civil Service, Local Authorities, Health Service and other Public Service Bodies and Statutory Agencies. Key Working Relationships • The Orderly/Security MTA will work under the supervision of the Orderly/Security Services Manager & Base Controllers. • The Orderly/Security MTA will also work with Nursing and Healthcare staff in various wards and/or departments. • The Orderly/Security MTA will work with various staff providing diagnostic testing to patients. • The Orderly/Security MTA will take direction from their own line management structure and also from Nursing, Medical and Health and Social Care Professionals. Purpose of the Post The role of the Orderly/Security MTA is to work as part of a team in the delivery of high quality, person-centred direct and indirect care to patients/service users, under the direction of their Orderly/Security line management structure and also from Nursing, Medical and Health and Social Care Professionals. Principal Duties and Responsibilities The Orderly/Security MTA role involves: Caring: • The person holding this post is required to support the principle that the care of the patient comes first at all times and will approach their work with the flexibility and enthusiasm necessary to make this principle a reality for every patient to the greatest possible degree. • Maintain throughout the HSE an awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities. • Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) standards as they apply to the role. For example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc., and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards as appropriate to the role. • Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service. • Ensure accuracy in patient identification. • Assist and support end-of-life care, providing a quiet, comfortable, dignified, compassionate caring environment for relatives and loved ones. • Assist with care of the deceased, preparation and transfer to the mortuary as required by line manager. • Assist with the appropriate storage and safekeeping of patient belongings in keeping with local policy. • Transport medical records, specimens, medical gases, equipment, medicines, stores, etc. • Be responsible for the general cleaning and disinfecting of patient equipment, wheelchairs, trolleys/beds, chairs or other ward/service equipment in keeping with national and locally agreed policies and standards. • Assist in the disposal of waste according to hospital policy. • Assist with the management of stocks and supplies. • Assist with general portering duties. • Collect blood and laboratory specimens and transfer to the laboratory. • Assist with transfer of deceased patients from the wards to the mortuary. • Attend to mortuary duties. • Keep patient trolleys clean and prepared with clean linen and supplied with oxygen at all times. Quality and Safety The Orderly/Security MTA will: • Support the implementation of quality standards and improvement initiatives. • Work within their own role, adhering to current legislation, policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines. • Maintain the confidentiality of all information made available during their work. • Understand and adhere to all relevant policies including Health & Safety, Safety Statements, Fire, Infection Control Policies, Hygiene Standards, Waste Management Policies, Manual Handling, Risk Management Procedures and statutory obligations. • Maintain a strict code of personal and general hygiene in the workplace and present for work wearing the agreed attire and identification in line with existing policies and procedures. • Carry assigned radio/bleep/phone for the role assigned and be contactable at all times. • Report all complaints in line with service policy. Health & Safety Including Maintaining a Safe Environment The Orderly/Security MTA will: • In accordance with Health and Safety at Work policy, observe all rules relating to Health and Safety and Conduct at Work and use any equipment provided in a safe and responsible manner. • Adhere to local procedures for reporting to and leaving duty. • Be aware of risks and minimise them where possible. Be aware of fire exits, keep exits free from obstruction, attend mandatory fire training and participate in fire drills. • Conduct themselves in a manner that ensures the safe care of patients, visitors and staff. • Only undertake any duty related to a patient for which they are trained and advise the relevant manager of any training needs. • Attend to spillages, when necessary, as quickly as possible to prevent accidents. • Report any accidents, near misses or incidents which may compromise the health and safety of patients, staff or visitors to the person in charge and take appropriate action in line with local policies and procedures. • Report any broken or unsafe items, equipment faults that need repair and take them out of circulation as required in keeping with service policy. • Report any maintenance issues promptly in keeping with service policy. • Move or assist in moving equipment and/or furniture as necessary and ensure all equipment is stored safely. • Assist in keeping service areas clean and tidy. • Assist with waste management, ensuring agreed standards for the segregation, storage and transportation of waste are maintained in line with local and national policies. General Duties The Orderly/Security MTA will: • Keep wheelchairs in each ward and department clean and in good repair. • Attend in-service training as required. • Work as part of a team. • Co-operate and assist with National Audits. • Demonstrate the ability to prioritise job requests. • Work in Theatre when required. • Attach and remove positioning devices to theatre tables (after training). • Perform any other duties that may be assigned appropriate to their work. • Assist ambulance personnel from time to time in patient transfers. • Provide support to Emergency Department staff in the performance of their duties. • Convey reports, pharmacy items or stores between departments. • Move furniture and beds as required. • Ensure that all portable medical gas cylinders and oxygen cylinders are in proper working order and change them as required. • Ensure that all clients and visitors to the hospital behave in a proper and dignified manner. • Carry out such security duties as assigned by the line manager or nominated deputy. • Control and restrain those who are acting aggressively or pose a threat to the safety and welfare of others. • Liaise with the Gardaí where the behaviour of persons requires Garda involvement. • Provide assistance with enhanced care. • Accompany staff whose official duties require them to leave the main hospital building and go to outlying locations in the performance of their duties. • Monitor all access and exit routes in the hospital and ensure that they remain free from obstruction at all times. • Secure the entrance and exit points to the hospital at designated times and thereafter let people in and out as required. • Monitor and control visitors’ movements, especially outside designated visiting times. • Accept responsibility for all keys to hospital premises and only issue them to authorised personnel in accordance with agreed protocols. • Control car parking to ensure that access and exit routes are kept clear at all times and designated car park spaces are occupied by those they are intended for. • Collect and transfer all monies collected from paid car parking to an authorised officer of the Board. • Check the hospital grounds and building at regular intervals and ensure that all entrances and exits are properly secured and, where not, properly secure them. • Report to the person in charge of the hospital any incidents which warrant further action, including the involvement of the Gardaí. • Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by an authorised officer of the Board. • In relation to Health and Safety, be aware of your own health and safety and that of your colleagues and others at work. • Attend training days and educational updates, particularly in the areas of lifting techniques, fire drills and in-service development. • Be aware at all times of the need for confidentiality in relation to patient care, whether ongoing or planned in the future. Be aware of the need at all times for confidentiality in relation to staff and colleagues. • Plan work using initiative and maintain a high standard of service at all times. • Treat patients, visitors and fellow workers at all times with respect and dignity. • Be aware at all times of the need to maintain the dignity of patients, particularly in the areas of toileting, bathing and transferring between areas of the hospital. Communication and Teamwork Effective communication is a core skill required by a Multi Task Attendant. These skills will be used to provide a caring service to the public in a courteous and effective manner. The Orderly/Security MTA will: • Operate in accordance with the values of the HSE. Administrative Duties The Orderly/Security MTA will: • Attend staff meetings and contribute constructively to the smooth running of the relevant service area as required. • As required, update records in line with local policy relevant to the role assigned.
