Contract info: Commencing 14th July 2025. 12 month contract. 19.5 hours per week. The Microbiology Department in the Mater Hospital provides a clinical microbiology service to the hospital and general practice in the catchment area. Services include bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, tuberculosis, and a molecular diagnostic service. The Microbiology department has four Consultant Clinical Microbiologists, three Specialists Registrars, and two Registrars. Microbiology registrars are well supervised, with several consultant led multi -disciplinary team meetings (MDTs) weekly. These include daily MDTs in the intensive care unit, in addition to Vascular MDTs, Heart and Lung transplant MDTs, Orthopaedic MDTs, Haematology MDTs, and Infectious Diseases MDTS. Duties of the post include authorizing laboratory results, phoning critical results, seeing patients on consults, attending MDTs, and attending meetings. Training: The Microbiology Registrar post has excellent training opportunities, and provides a pathway to the higher specialist training in clinical microbiology. Microbiology registrars work closely with Specialist registrars in microbiology, and are closely supervised by Consultant Microbiologists. Participation in laboratory management meetings, infection prevention and control meetings and antimicrobial stewardship meeting provide valuable training experience in microbiology. Microbiology registrars are active in clinical audit and projects in the microbiology department in the Mater Hospital. Teaching is actively encouraged to include teaching laboratory scientists in training, infection prevention and control nurses, and teaching non-consultant hospital doctors.
