Retained Firefighter
The Carlow Fire Service is a retained service. Retained firefighters work on a part-time basis. Membership of the Fire Service is voluntary, and a firefighter may resign at any time, having provided statutory notice. The appropriate retaining fee and hourly rate for attendance at fires and drill sessions will be paid according to the Approved National Scale as set out in Appendix A. Attendance at 85% of all drills and training sessions on a quarterly basis is necessary to qualify for a retaining fee. Firefighters who do not meet this requirement may lose 50% of the retainer. Annual Leave, Certified Sick Leave, and Jury Duty (if not excused) may be valid excuses for absence. Other penalties may also apply. A successful candidate will be offered employment on a probationary basis as a Retained Firefighter, subject to satisfactory completion of the following courses: (a) Firefighting Skills Course – full-time, three-week course held at a training centre in Ireland; may involve staying away from home Monday to Friday. (b) Breathing Apparatus Course – full-time, two-week course held at a training centre in Ireland; may involve staying away from home Monday to Friday. (c) Compartment Fire Behaviour Training Course – full-time, one-week course held at a training centre in Ireland; may involve staying away from home Monday to Friday. Earnings of a Retained Firefighter vary depending on activity levels. They consist of an annual retainer, payments for attending training, callouts, Community Fire Safety duties, and other duties. An annual review is undertaken in December to identify stations with low incident mobilisation. Where such levels fall below 75 hours in a calendar year, an adjustment payment will ensure a minimum annual payment of 75 hours, calculated pro-rata for new entrants. Qualifications Character: Firefighters must be of good character, physically and medically fit, and possess intelligence, courage, and initiative. They must pass medical, physical, and other examinations, which may include cardiovascular assessments. Firefighters must undertake any other examinations deemed necessary by the Chief Fire Officer. Applicants will be subject to Garda Vetting prior to appointment. Firefighters must comply with the “Occupational Health Scheme for Members of the Retained Fire Service” (Local Government Management Services Board, July 2005) and undergo regular and ad-hoc medical examinations. Administrative Officer
Reserve List Whilst the Council is recruiting for an Administrative Officer (AONB and Geopark), a reserve list will be compiled for future permanent, temporary, full-time, and part-time posts for Administrative Officer (AONB and Geopark) positions at Council Offices in both Downpatrick and Crossmaglen Community Centre for a period of 12 months. Working Pattern 28 hours per week, Monday to Thursday. This post is eligible to participate in the Flexi Scheme. Post holders must be prepared to work outside normal office hours, including evenings, weekends, and public and extra statutory holidays, for which appropriate payment will be made or time in lieu granted if relevant. Duties and Responsibilities Attend AONB and Geopark partnership and work group meetings, including preparation of agenda, collation and distribution of documentation and reports, preparation and distribution of minutes, and follow-up. Liaise effectively on arranging partnership business with elected members, offices of Ministers, senior government officials, and a wide range of organizations Prepare/assist in the preparation of publications and reports and assist in the preparation and implementation of the AONB and Geopark programme of work. Handle correspondence and enquiries, draft replies, and manage reports of activities and sightings in a tactful and efficient manner, ensuring details are correctly recorded and referred to colleagues or another agency as appropriate. Maintain a high standard of customer service. Assist in marketing and promotion of the service, provide a public information and referral service, and deliver public presentations. Organise and deliver a range of events including launches, conferences, and outdoor activities, acting as the key organisational contact and directing contractors and suppliers. Prepare, collate, and forward documents and supporting financial information to funders and other agencies in support of grant applications and claims. Process purchase orders and invoices, assist in administration of budgets and financial reports, manage petty cash, handle cash and cheques received, and be responsible for receipts and lodgements. Seasonal Amenities Workers
THE POSITION: Waterford City & County Council invites applications from suitably qualified persons who wish to be considered for inclusion on a panel from which temporary contracts for the role of Seasonal Amenities Worker for the Summer Season (June to September 2026) will be recruited. Seasonal Amenities Workers will be recruited in the Metropolitan Municipal District, the Comeragh District and the Dungarvan/Lismore District. Please indicate on the application form which area you are applying for. Applicants may apply for only one area. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Targeted Litter & Waste Duties · Manual Litter Picking: Systematic removal of litter from beaches, footpaths, parks, walks and Council amenity areas. · High-Frequency Bin Emptying: Maintaining a rigorous schedule for emptying public waste and recycling bins to prevent "nuisance" overflows. · Blackspot Monitoring: Conducting extra patrols in known "litter blackspots" or areas with high footfall. · Hazardous Waste Removal: Identifying and contacting GSS to arrange for safe disposing of dangerous items like broken glass, medical waste, or animal carcasses. · Fly-Tipping Response: Reporting any larger dumped items (e.g., household bags or appliances) found in remote park areas or beach car parks to the GSS · Dog Fouling Control : Promoting the "Bag It, Bin It" message and ensuring specific dog waste bins are serviced regularly General Duties · Litter Collection - Perform regular patrols to collect and dispose of litter from beaches, parks, and streets. · Waste Management: Empty and reline public waste and recycling bins at scheduled intervals. · Amenity Upkeep : Remove litter from playgrounds, cemeteries, and picnic areas and all amenity areas ensuring they are free of debris. · Beach Maintenance : Conduct beach clean-ups, including the removal of washed-up waste as directed. · Public Conveniences: Replenishing supplies in Public Toilets during hours of duty · Public Interaction: Respond to public enquiries politely and report any anti-social behaviour or infrastructure damage to supervisors. · Health & Safety: Undertake training for Health & Safety, and general performance as assigned; · Interpersonal: Be responsible for the maintenance of good work practices and working relationships; · Collaborative Support: Liaise with community groups like Tidy Towns and assist with other tasks in the area as directed by the GSS. · Communication : Maintain and communicate information for the effective delivery of service; · Policy Compliance: Ensure compliance with organisational policies, procedures and legislation; · Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility and mobility consistent with the needs of the service; · Team Work : Co-operate with the familiarisation/instruction of other employees where appropriate; · Resource Management: Manage and maintain resources effectively and efficiently; · Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time. QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POST 1. CHARACTER Each candidate must be of good character. 2. HEALTH Each candidate must be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. 3. Salary The pay for Seasonal Amenities Workers will be €15 per hour. Premium pay will be applied as appropriate for hours worked on Sunday. The salary shall be fully inclusive and shall be as determined from time to time. The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with government policy. The holder of the position shall pay to the local authority any fees or other monies (other than inclusive salary) payable to and received by him/her by virtue of his/her position or in respect of services which he/she is required by or under any enactment to perform. Superannuation Superannuation contributions as relevant will be deducted. Hours of Work Seasonal Amenities Workers will be required to work 30 hours each week over 5 days as part of a 7 day weekly rotating roster . Weekend work is an intergral part of this role and only those with availability to work weekends should apply. All hours worked are subject to and recorded in accordance with the provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997, and the Organisation of Working Time Regulations, 2001. Waterford City & County Council requires employees to record their hours using the CORE/TDS Clocking system. Annual Leave The annual leave entitlement for the 4 month period is 7 days. One weeks notice to the GSS is required for all leave requests. Granting of leave is not guaranteed at peak times. Residence The successful candidate shall reside in the district in which his/her duties are to be performed, or within a reasonable distance thereof. Code of Conduct/Organisational Policies Employees are to be required to adhere to all current and future Waterford City & County Council codes of practice including Code of Conduct of Employees and all current and future organisational policies including, but not limited to Health and Safety, Communications, Data Protection, Equality, Staff Mobility, Attendance Management and Use of Electronic Equipment. Training Employees are required to attend and participate fully in training programmes as may be decided by the Council from time to time and to apply their learning in the course of their daily working activities. Reporting Arrangements Seasonal Amenities Workers will report directly to the General Services Supervisor or appropriate supervisor in the Area or to any other employee of Waterford City & County Council as the Chief Executive, Director of Services or other appropriate employee may designate for this purpose. A system of regular appraisal will be operated during employment, which will involve discussions between the employee and the line manager regarding performance and conduct.
