Core Responsibilities: The Support Worker will: • Assist under the direction of the person in charge/ line manager in the provision of quality service by promoting and adopting the Corlann services ethos, working in line with national and locally devised policies and regulations. • Demonstrate motivation and appreciate the importance of providing a quality service for people we support. • Respect individuals supported, their families and colleagues showing dignity, courtesy and professionalism at all times. • Listen to the individual’s wishes and support the person to advocate for themselves. Where required, assist them by advocating on their behalf or to access the independent advocacy services. • Actively promote the participation of individuals in their own care, and encourage as much independence as possible. Where required, carry out assigned and delegated responsibilities involving direct care and all activities of daily living i.e. to assist individuals to maintain standards of personal hygiene, dietary intake, physical, mental health and any other personal needs. • Assist the individual in the selection and preparation of meals to ensure a healthy nutritional balance. • As required, assist individuals with budgeting, banking and management of their personal finances, ensuring individuals monies are accounted for and recorded as appropriate. • Be aware of the person’s ongoing health needs and assisting with them where required. Contribute in a respectful and positive way to the person’s wellbeing and development. You will be personally and actively engaged in supplying the things that have been proven to help the person. • Support individuals to have valued roles which facilitate them to contribute in a positive way in their local community. • Maintain the confidentiality of all information made available to you during the course of your work. • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and be able to work as part of a team. • Promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace. Quality and Safety The Support Worker will: • Work within own role, adhering to current legislation, policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines. Adhere to the Health Care Act 2007 Regulations within your work location. • Undertake assigned duties under the direction of the line manager/ team lead in such a way as to ensure that care is of a high standard • Report all complaints in accordance with service policy • Ensure that all records in relation to individuals supported by the services are up to date, correctly filed and managed as per the services records management procedure/ system. • Ensure all actions support the enhancement of a person-centred service and a person-centred culture within the team • Co-operate with quality reviews/ service evaluations and assist with the implementation of any necessary corrective action. Health & Safety: The Support Worker will: • Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and, in particular, to comply with employees’ obligations as set out under Section 9 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005. Ensure that the procedures set out in the Safety Statement are implemented at all times. • Become familiar with and practise fire drill procedures within places of work, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and firefighting. • Use any equipment provided in a safe and responsible manner. • Utilise service transport as per the organisation’s Safe Driving for Work procedure. Report any faults as they arise. • Understand and adhere to all relevant Corlann policies, guidelines, and procedures, comply with health and safety, infection control and risk management procedures; and comply with statutory obligations. • Report any accidents, near misses, incident or potential incident to the person in charge which may compromise the health and safety of people supported by the service, staff or visitors and take appropriate action including completion of accident/ incident forms on the online OLIS system (including for near miss incidents). • Only undertake any duty related to individual’s care for which you are trained. • Maintain a strict code of personal and general hygiene in the workplace as per the employee handbook and existing policies and procedures. • Present to work wearing the agreed attire, footwear, and identification, having regard to the highest standard of attire and personal hygiene. This includes not having possession of personal mobile phones while delivering care to people supported. • Conduct yourself in a manner that ensures safe individual care. Participate in maintaining a safe environment for people supported, visitors and staff by ensuring vigilance in identifying potential hazards and by taking the necessary steps to remove such hazards. • It is your duty to report any concerns you have for the safety and welfare of the people we support to your Manager immediately in line with Trust in Care (2005). You are also legally obliged to comply with the Criminal Justice (Withholding of Information on Offences Against Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act, 2012. Education & Training The Support Worker will: • Attend induction and mandatory training, so that you fully understand and work with all the procedures and guidelines within the organisation. Pass assessments associated with training. • As directed, participate in the induction of new staff. • Participate in team based development, education, training and learning. • Participate in supervision and performance reviews in conjunction with his / her line manager. Communication and Teamwork: The Support Worker will: • Operate in accordance with the values of Corlann. Incremental credit may be granted in respect of recognised experience. New employees wishing to claim incremental credit for previous employment must submit a Salary Confirmation Form within the first year of employment to the Wages & Salaries Department, SI-VUH. Otherwise, the Hospital will not be liable for retrospective payments. Employees experiencing difficulties obtaining documentation from previous employers should notify the Wages & Salaries Department as soon as possible within the first year of employment. The post is temporary, full-time, and pensionable. Annual Leave Annual leave and public holidays are granted in accordance with the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, Hospital policy, and relevant national circulars governing leave. Public holidays are managed in line with the Annual Leave and Public Holiday policy. The annual leave entitlement is 30 days pro rata per annum. Working Hours 35 hours per week. Flexibility is required in consideration of service needs. You will be required to work agreed rosters or on-call arrangements as advised by your line manager. Contracted hours are subject to change between 8am and 8pm over seven days to meet the requirements of extended day services introduced by the Hospital. Superannuation Various Superannuation Schemes are in operation. You will become a member of the scheme relevant to your entry date into the public service and any previous service history. Relevant superannuation information will be issued directly from the Superannuation Section, Wages & Salaries Department. Probation The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 9 months, which may, in exceptional circumstances, be extended by up to 6 weeks by the South Infirmary–Victoria University Hospital. Specific reasons for any extension will be provided in writing. Performance and conduct will be monitored continuously throughout the probationary period, with written reviews every 3 months to assess suitability for continued employment. Termination during or at the end of probation remains at the sole discretion of the South Infirmary–Victoria University Hospital. Following satisfactory completion of probation, the Hospital will confirm the appointment on a permanent basis. Notice When resigning, the post holder must provide four weeks’ written notice prior to resignation. Failure to provide the required notice may result in forfeiture of one month’s salary, deducted as liquidated damages from any remuneration due at the time of resignation.
