EP-27 Researcher - MOVPE growth of III-V semiconductor material and nanostructures  Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures (EPN) group, Tyndall National Institution and University College Cork fund a  Post-Doc position on “MOVPE growth of III-V semiconductor material and nanostructures “. The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures group is a well-established research team in Ireland addressing epitaxial growth by MOVPE of devices and quantum structures. We are seeking highly self-motivated applicants with strong experimental attitude to apply for this position. Key Responsibilities The research will focus on developing applications with semiconductor, largely based on novel nanostructure concepts and expanding the Tyndall unique metamorphic platform. The candidate will be called to contribute to the group effort towards the realisation of advanced planar devices, such as broadband emittters, temperature insensitive lasers, high speed modulators and others. Recent results on the unique system developed at Tyndall were featured in major reviews, such as Nature Photonics (e.g. Gediminas Juska, et al. “Towards quantum dot based arrays of entangled photon emitters”, Nature Photonics 7, 527 (2013); T. H. Chung, et al. “Selective carrier injection into patterned arrays of pyramidal quantum dots for entangled photon light-emitting diodes”, Nature Photonics 10, 782 (2016)). Similarly EPN has been at the forefront of growth understanding and modelling, see e.g.: A. M. Gocalinska et al.,” Early stages of InP nanostructure formation on AlInAs”, Phys Rev. B 101, 165310 (2020) and E. E. Mura, et al., “Importance of Overcoming MOVPE Surface Evolution Instabilities for >1.3 μm Metamorphic Lasers on GaAs”, Cryst. Growth Des. 2021, 21, 4, 2068–2075 The main focus of this position is developing novel epitaxial growth protocols to develop advanced site-controlled quantum dot structures, capable of hosting excitonic Wigner molecule assemblies. The work will include running structural characterization techniques, such as AFM and XRD, as guidance in the development of such structures. The postdoc position will also involve collaborating intensively with the rest of the EPN group and collaborating ones (e.g. B. Corbett and F. Peters), including growth and structural characterization of more conventional device structure (lasers, modulators, LEDs, etc.), or any other projects such as polycrystalline III-V on foreign substrates. The successful candidate is also expected to collaborate with the rest of the EPN group on industrial engagement and projects. The successful candidate is also expected to engage in PhD mentoring and supervision, and also follow Tyndall outreach engagement policies. Other responsibilities The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures group was established in January 2007 at Tyndall National Institute (http://www.tyndall.ie) under an SFI (http://www.sfi.ie/home/index.asp) Principal Investigator grant. The group is led by Dr. E. Pelucchi. The Postdoc level position is open for candidates of EU and non EU nationalities. The appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension (up to three years), and previous experience in the field is preferentially requested. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas including Connected IOT, Smart Agriculture, Industry 4.0, Environmental sensing and  wearable sensing for fitness and health .  The Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) group has recently secured funded proposals in the development of Wearable systems from a variety of national funding agencies (Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, Irish Research Centre) as well as international funding agencies (Horizon2020, ECSEL). In these projects the WSN group is carrying out  multi-disciplinary research projects  in  both applied and fundamental research activities  associated with Wearable Smart Systems integration, embedded computing, and edge analytics. In particular, the WSN research group at Tyndall has recently received significant funding from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI) as part of its  Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) for the HOLISTICS project . HOLISTICS will connect Irish-based companies (SME & MNC) in the Med-tech, Sports Science, ICT and Design/Human Factors Engineering sectors with leading Irish Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) and Clinicians to exploit state-of-the-art hardware, software, data analytics and visualization technologies for  wearable systems . HOLISTICS builds on several years of engagement between Tyndall and Irish companies to address disruptive business opportunities in Health-Tech as well as significant experience in driving large scale Research & Innovation programs. The WSN group is looking to recruit a number of  Application Engineer  to develop the necessary hardware and software system prototypes for test and validation with clinical partners in the HOLISTICs project in the delivery of disruptive research in  wearable systems for healthcare. PURPOSE OF ROLE Reporting to the WSN Head of Group or his nominee, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement applied research projects in a variety of fast-moving, industrially relevant areas. Working with the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Head of Group and industry applied research team, the successful candidate will be part of a team of multi-disciplinary industry aligned researchers with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low-power system hardware and software design to execute industry defined applied research projects. The team comprises of engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications. Activities will include applied wearable research implementation, hardware/software co-design of embedded systems, and travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings, to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading industry-focused applied research group. The position takes responsibility for optical design and packaging activities in the new pilot line funded under the Disruptive Technology innovation Fund (DTIF programme). A large part of the research will involve the design and development of advanced packaging processes for micro optic and fiber optic components. This will include design activities using software simulation tools such as Zemax and Lumerical and development of packaging processes using Tyndall’s packaging equipment. The position will also require the person to write technical reports about their research and to present their research to a variety of stakeholders, including the wider research community and key funding agencies such as Enterprise Ireland. The project involves strong collaboration with industry partners to develop packaging processes that can be scaled to volume and used for a wide range of industry applications, such as optical communications, medical devices and sensing. Candidates who can demonstrate practical experience of working with photonic devices and optical components are preferred.
