Senior Speech And Language Therapist, Medical Respiratory Service
Speech and Language Therapists have specialist skills that are recognised as integral to the respiratory multidisciplinary team. The MMUH SLT Team is expanding and an exciting area of development is in Respiratory Medicine. With increased resource, there is scope to design the service from an inpatient and outpatient perspective. The Senior Speech and Language Therapist will lead and deliver the medical respiratory SLT service in collaboration with Senior and Staff Grade SLTs working in the area. In addition to clinical responsibilities they will be expected to develop the SLT service to patients under the Respiratory and Medical Specialist Teams and the National Isolation Unit as the service demands with a commitment to continuous quality improvement and quality assured patient centred care. They will contribute to the overall operation and development of the communication and swallowing service within the hospital in collaboration with the Speech and Language Therapist Manager and other Speech and Language Therapists within the department. Our practice ensures residents remain in their local community with better health outcomes, helping to avoid their transfer to acute facilities. Referrals and admissions are accepted from acute services, the community and nearby residential units. We are committed to the delivery of best practice nursing care to 131 residents with varying complex care needs. This includes: tracheostomies; IV fluids/antibiotics; complex wounds and subcutaneous fluids. We provide an excellent End-of-Life service and are actively involved with the Hospice Friendly Hospital programme. Each unit is managed by a CNM 2 and CNM 1 and is staffed with Staff Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Multi-task Attendants. There is a medical team with 24-hour medical cover and Allied Health Services (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy etc). Each unit is supported by Household and Catering Attendants. Cherry Orchard Hospital has free on-site parking as well as a great staff canteen serving hot breakfasts and lunches. We are situated close to Liffey Valley Shopping centre, our campus has easy access to Dublin city centre as well as to the N4 / M4 and the M50. The bus routes that stop outside of our campus are S4, G2 and L55 with more nearby.

This purposely re-designed HSE unit was a collaboration of the HSE and the Friends of St. Brigid’s Hospice. i It consists of a 13 bedded SPC inpatient unit This is a consultant led interdisciplinary, vibrant and enthusiastic service incorporating medical, nursing, health care assistants, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, administrative and catering staff. There is also a dynamic community palliative care consultant led team which primarily is delivered by front facing community palliative care clinical nurse specialists to persons with SPC needs living at home or in residential care. This is done in collaboration with other hospital palliative care and other clinical teams, general practitioners, public health nursing, primary care teams and nursing homes.
