Lecturer Below The Bar In Music, Contract Type B

National University of Ireland,Galway€39,417 - €61,176 per year

Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer in Music at NUI Galway. In 2018, NUI Galway introduced a new BA degree programme in Music. This is offered as a Joint Honours Arts degree, with students taking Music alongside two other subjects in first year, and continuing with Music and one other subject to degree level. During their degree, students take core modules in the history of western art music, Irish traditional music, theory, performance, composition, sound technology, harmony and keyboard harmony, and performance analysis; in their final year they must either write a dissertation or submit a portfolio of original compositions. Optional modules include further modules in both performance and Irish traditional music, as well as musical theatre, editing, orchestration and arranging, choral conducting, counterpoint, opera, popular music, and arts management. Third-year students have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester at a third-level institution, or to take a music-related work placement in Ireland. There are plans to introduce programmes in Music at MA and PhD level over the next two years. The creation of the new degree builds on, and complements, existing strengths in the areas of Creative Arts, notably in Drama and Theatre Studies, Film and Digital Media, Creative Writing, Irish Studies (Literature and Music), Literature and Publishing, and others. These strengths include several thriving undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as major partnerships with creative arts organisations, including the Abbey Theatre (Ireland’s national theatre), the Galway International Arts Festival, the ConTempo String Quartet, Music for Galway, and leading traditional musicians Sharon Shannon and Win Horan. The university also runs an innovative ‘Arts in Action’ programme, which provides concerts, recitals and performances for staff and students from across the university. Galway itself has a vibrant and thriving arts community. As part of the development of the BA in Music, the university wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Music. This appointment will be of a musicologist and/or music theorist in the field of western art music with the ability to teach and coordinate modules in performance across a range of musical genres. As a scholar, they should have a national/international profile, or the potential for this, and be expected to engage in high quality research. In addition to teaching and coordinating modules in performance, they would also be expected to teach modules in western art music history and/or theory, and at least three of the following: ethnomusicology, keyboard harmony, musical theatre, musicianship, opera, performance analysis, popular music. The appointee would be expected to take a leading role in developing and shaping a new MA in Music, to teach and coordinate modules at Master’s level, and to supervise doctoral students when PhD degrees are introduced. They should have experience of teaching on Music degree programmes at third level. The successful candidate will have a track record of publications commensurate with their scholarly experience. In their role as coordinator of performance, they will liaise with and build relationships with music practitioners, both performers and educators. They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the academic and creative life of the university, including the organisation of conferences, lectures and other events. Given the strength of the Creative Arts within the university, an ability to work with colleagues in Drama, Film and Creative Writing would be desirable. For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Aidan Thomson, email aidan.thomson@nuigalway.ie. Additional information on http://www.nuigalway.ie/creativearts/ Salary €39,417 p.a. to €61,176 p.a. (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011) (This appointment will be made on the Lecturer Below the Bar scale in line with current Government pay policy) (This appointment will be made on the Lecturer scale in line with current Government pay policy) (For pre 1995 public sector entrants in Ireland, the D class Salary rates will apply) Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 30th September 2021. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date. Appointments will be conditional on work authorisation validation.
