Caretaker The duties attached to the post of Caretaker are, inter alia, as follows: a)     To care for the school/centre premises and contents and to prevent, as far as possible, any damage to structure, furniture, equipment and fittings; b)     To keep the school/centre premises, furniture, fittings in a clean and safe condition; c)     To keep in a clean condition all glass in doors, windows, etc., where same is accessible without the use of long ladders; d)     To see to the heating of the building during the cold period of the year and to maintain the central heating systems in good working order; e)     To keep in safe custody the keys of all rooms in the buildings and to ensure that no unauthorised persons shall have access to any part of the buildings; f)      To open and close the centre as directed by the Principal/Director; g)     To be responsible, under the supervision of the Principal/Director, for the planting, care and maintenance of the centre grounds and to prevent trespass thereon; h)     To note and arrange for the receipt of stores, timber, iron, parcels of class and other materials for general use, and for the transfer of stores, equipment and similar transactions; i)      To carry out any minor repairs which may be necessary from time to time and to touch up any breaches in paint on walls, furniture, etc. j)      To check equipment etc. and report missing or broken tools or furniture. k)     And to observe Galway & Roscommon Education & Training Board Policy Statement of Safety, Health and Welfare at Work – Responsibilities of Caretaker.  2. Cleaner DAILY o Daily sweeping/vacuuming/cleaning of surfaces and floors in classrooms, corridors, offices as necessary o Daily cleaning, wiping and sweeping in canteen area and staff room after break and lunch o Mopping and making safe any water or spills on floors o Cleaning and maintenance of reception area o Removal of paper from desk areas and the separation and disposal of waste o Cleaning and disinfecting toilet areas o Reporting any damage or hazards o Responsibility for the safe storage of all keys, fobs, hazardous materials, cleaning equipment and tools o Securing the school doors and windows on a daily basis   WEEKLY o Wiping down, dusting all window surfaces and removal of graffiti where necessary o Thorough disinfecting and cleaning of toilet areas, urinals, toilet bowls and floors of toilet areas o Cleaning offices including surfaces and floors o Emptying the waste and recycling bins throughout the school o Refuse bins to be left out for removal from premises o Inspect all areas to identify problems needing attention MONTHLY o Carry out a review of all areas for cleaning and upkeep to identify and plan cleaning on a scheduled basis GENERAL o Responsibility for maintaining floor areas and surfaces to the highest standards of cleanliness and hygienic condition o to support the schools Green Policy of Recycling and Waste Disposal o Preparation of Examination Centres as necessary o Preparation of school premises for special occasions o Ensure that the school is cleaned during holiday periods o Flexibility with regard to rotating duties with colleagues o Working as part of a team.
