Practice Tutor, Radiation Therapist, Clinical Specialist, University Hospital
Details of the Service Cork University Hospital (CUH) is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland with over 40 different medical and surgical specialties on the campus housing 1000 in-patient beds. CUH is the tertiary referral centre for the HSE Southern area, and the supra-regional area of Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. CUH therefore acts as a regional centre for secondary and tertiary care for the catchment population of 550,000 served by the HSE Southern area and a supra-regional centre for a total population of 1.1 million. A new state of the art Radiation Oncology facility is now open and houses cutting edge technology including 5 Elekta Versa HD Linear Accelerators capable of SABR/SRS along with Surface-guided radiotherapy on all Linac’s. The department also has 2 GE CT simulators and a brachytherapy suite. Health Regions geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024. Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline. Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are: · Integrated, locally planned and delivered · Easier to access and navigate · Available closer to home Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. Cork University Hospital is the largest statutory / HSE hospital in Ireland and the only Model 4 (Specialist Academic Teaching) Hospital in the state with all acute surgical and medical specialties integrated on the same campus (Adults, Paediatrics, Maternity and Mental Health). It is a regional centre for secondary and tertiary care for the catchment area of HSE South, and also provides a number of supra-regional services in a range of specialities to the entire southern one third of Ireland, spanning 3 other RHA areas, and treating patients from the counties of Limerick, Clare, Kerry, Tipperary, Wexford, Carlow, Laois, Waterford and Kilkenny. At a national level the Emergency Department at CUH operates one of the busiest, highest-volume frontline services in the country, managing over 75,000 annual presentations. It is a one of two designated Major Trauma Centres in the country, one of two 24/7 neurosurgical and stroke thrombectomy centres, one of five 24/7 PPCI centres, one of four cardiothoracic surgical centres, one of two comprehensive coagulation & haemophilia centres, a cystic fibrosis centre, Tertiary Paediatric Centre and one of eight (NCCP) Cancer Centres. CUH provides Level 3s Critical Care with regional services to include neurosurgery, cardiothoracics etc. The Speech & Language Therapy Department provides care across Cork University Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital, St. Finbarr’s Rehabilitation Unit & Mallow General Hospital. CUH is designated as the Regional Specialist Centre for Cardiac Services with a broad range of skills and expertise resulting in high volumes of activity and access to appropriate diagnostic and treatment facilities. They are responsible for managing their own caseload and for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of cardiac diagnostic services for service users according to service standards and best practice.This busy Cardiac Department carries out a comprehensive range of invasive and non-invasive cardiology procedures, including a paediatric service (ECG, echocardiogram, Holters and Exercise Stress test). The Cardiac Physiologist, Senior should be familiar with the techniques and range of equipment used in current medical practice for the diagnosis, treatment and care of cardiac patients. The major portion of the work commitment of the Cardiac Physiologist, Senior is with the Cardiology Department and in addition the holder of this post will be required to carry out and participate in a wide range of medical procedures. A complete understanding of all such procedures and ability to make accurate measurements is essential. WGH Staff Nurse Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Department consists of a 5 bedded unit with individual isolated negative pressure rooms. There are plans for the development of an additional 5 beds for high dependency patients. The unit caters for both Surgical and Medical patients, including postoperative patients, cardiac patients, neurology patients and patients requiring urgent continuous dialysis therapy. ICU also manages obstetric emergencies and paediatrics when required. We also care for and manage our critical patients who require transfer to a speciality hospital for further intervention ensuring their safe transfer to the correct facility in a timely manner. The Intensive Care Unit is run by a highly specialised and experienced multidisciplinary team. The ICU promotes education and continuous learning for staff within the unit and at other educational centres, currently providing placement facility for staff enrolling on the Critical Care Foundation Course in affiliation with UCD and SETU Staff nurse Intensive Care Unit will report operationally to the CMN1/CNM2 Shift leader/CNMIII and and will be professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing.
