Job Summary Duration: Permanent . A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months. Basic Function: The Technologist will have a key role in assisting researchers within the soil and environmental research programme and take an active role in contributing to ongoing research projects in this area. This post will support the application of spectroscopy and chemometrics for the analysis of environmental samples (soil, sediment, water, gas, recycled waste products) using benchtop MIR/NIR and XRF, handheld FTIR, portable XRF and field-based FTIR.  They will be responsible for progressing the spectroscopy and chemometric capabilities at Teagasc Johnstown Castle to develop non-destructive, ‘green’ analytical methods across a range of environmental samples in lab and field settings.  Additional responsibilities include administration, workflow, quality control and maintenance and instrumentation troubleshooting in spectroscopy lab areas that include high throughput MIR/NIR and XRF spectrometers in both benchtop and handheld versions, and support for field based FTIR for gas analysis. He/she will be responsible for the development of sample archives, spectral libraries and data processing in MIR/NIR and XRF supporting the development of ‘green’ analytical techniques at Teagasc.. The spectroscopy and chemometric research at Teagasc is aligned with the soil physics, chemistry and biology laboratories which provides an analytical facility for a wide range of soil parameters. This role includes training and mentoring post-graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in spectroscopic methods, instrumentation and preprocessing of spectral data.. c. The technologist will be responsible for technology foresight to identify emerging technologies, instrumentation and sampling methods in spectroscopy and, assisting researchers with grant applications, results analysis and publication in peer reviewed journals. Background: Teagasc Johnstown Castle is leading research into understanding fundamental soil processes and nutrient dynamics that underpin the environmental and agronomic sustainability of Irish and global agricultural systems. The research programme generates and analyses a large number of soil, plant, water and gas samples to evaluate farm sustainability. The research programme is supported by an extensive laboratory and field facilities including benchtop MIR/NIR and XRF spectroscopy, handheld FTIR, portable XRF, and field-based FTIR for the analysis of environmental samples. Johnstown Castle hosts the Irish soil information system and database, the national agricultural soil carbon observatory and the agricultural catchments programme. The spectroscopy and chemometrics research at Teagasc Johnstown Castle supports Ph.D. and post-doctoral fellowships in collaboration with national and international universities and government agencies.  Teagasc is now seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic spectroscopy and chemometrics technologist that will join an active and dynamic research group. The position will be based in Teagasc Environment, Soils and Land-use Department in Johnstown Castle, Wexford. This research department which is part of the Crops, Environment and Land-use programme, is located at Johnstown Castle and is Ireland’s leading research group on soils and environment related research. It conducts both fundamental and applied research on a wide range of subjects, e.g. nutrient efficiency, soil fertility/quality, water quality, gaseous emissions, agro-ecology, and land use. Johnstown Castle has an extensive array of laboratory, greenhouse and field facilities to support research as well as 190 hectares of farmland.
