Our Service - BreastCheck (The National Breast Screening Programme) BreastCheck – The National Breast Screening Programme - plays a central role in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer in Ireland, providing free mammograms to women aged 50-69 every two years. Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in Ireland with over 2,700 women diagnosed each year. Survival has improved as a result of screening, symptomatic detection and improved treatment options. Locum Consultant Radiologist The BreastCheck Western Unit of the National Breast Screening Programme offers biannual screening to women in the relevant catchment area. The catchment population for the Galway Unit includes Clare, North Tipperary, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Donegal and Galway. Women who have an abnormal mammogram will be recalled to the static unit and will have further view, ultrasound and biopsy. The appointee will co-ordinate their activities with the other BreastCheck radiologists, one of whom will be the Clinical Director. The appointee will be experienced in breast imaging; the interpretation screening mammography in the Breast Screening Unit, as well as the follow-up recalls and triple assessment.
