Burial Grounds Caretaker

Duties The person employed shall be required to carry out duties as may from time to time be assigned to them in relation to their employment and as may be appropriate to any particular function of any local authority for which the Chief Executive is responsible and carry out such instructions as may be given in relation to the performance of duties. 1. The Caretaker shall take charge of and be responsible to Clare County Council for the general care, maintenance, and conservation of the burial ground. 2. The Caretaker shall be available on Saturdays and Sundays for any duties as may arise. 3. The Caretaker shall be contactable by telephone from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm each day and available, if required, within a reasonable time. Clare County Council will provide a dedicated mobile phone to each Caretaker in respect of the duties assigned to them. 4. To report promptly to the Council: - a) Any unauthorised burial. b) Any case where bones or human remains are accidentally exhumed in the course of an interment. c) Any unauthorised interference with any grave, or any damage or injury to tombstones, crosses, or wreaths. d) Any encroachment by trees on graves, or the planting on or near graves spaces of shrubs, bushes, or plants. e) Any unauthorised access by animals to the burial ground. f) Any damage to fences or boundary walls. g) Any case where the drainage of vaults or graves is necessary. 5. The Caretaker shall ensure that after interment, the plot is properly filled in and neatly finished. 6. The Caretaker shall ensure that all unsightly waste materials and all stones not required for the purpose of burials are removed from the burial ground. 7. The Caretaker shall ensure that the burial ground is properly maintained at all times. 8. The Caretaker shall ensure that all paths and walkways are properly weeded, edged, and gravelled. The County Council shall supply stones, chippings or gravel as required. 9. The Caretaker shall cut and remove all grass, weeds and briars in the burial ground as required. 10. The Caretaker shall ensure the burial ground is kept free of litter and waste materials and ensure correct disposal of same in accordance with best waste management practices. 11. The Caretaker shall maintain the hedge of the burial ground and the entrance road to the burial ground, if applicable. 12. The Caretaker shall notify the County Council of any necessary repairs required to the fences and the boundary walls of the burial ground. 13. The Caretaker shall paint the gates and enclosed railings of the burial ground during the summer months. The materials for this work to be supplied by the County Council. 14. The Caretaker shall ensure the maintenance and security of all tools supplied by the Council, where provided. 15. The Caretaker shall keep the gates of the burial ground closed - when not required to be open in connection with an internment or other proper purpose - and to retain the key in his or her possession, if applicable. 16. The Caretaker shall report to the Rural Directorate, Clare County Council. 17. The person employed as a Caretaker shall be required to perform assigned duties exercising a duty of care, in the interest of safety of oneself, fellow employees and the general public, at all times in compliance with Clare County Council’s Health & Safety Management System. Starting salary for new entrants to the sector is €14.56 per hour.
